Need hotel recommendation~Oaxaca City

Can't Post | Private Reply
I will be traveling to Oaxaca in February and wonder if anyone can recommend an affordable decent hotel in the colonial center...close to the zocalo? Reading hotel reviews on line has been discouraging...high prices and mediocre feedback.
I would really appreciate some good leads! Thanks~

I wholeheartedly recommend La Casa de Los Abuelos http://www.oaxacabedandbreakfast.org/casadelosabuelos.html I stayed in one of their single rooms which had a microwave, small fridge and a coffee pot, double bed, desk and bathroom. My friends stayed in one of their small apartments with a full kitchen and sitting area. The location is wonderful almost directly across from the Santo Domingo Church and you can walk everywhere. Rosa and Luis Arroyo are the managers and they could not have been any nicer or more helpful. They are relatives of the family that runs the Cafe de Olla just down the street. I think it is a good restaurant with fairly reasonable prices. This is another link http://lacasa-de-rosita.com/.

We were quite comfortable and we were there for three weeks last March. The rates were very reasonable as well.

Check the Mexican/Oaxacan news to see if there are any protests at this time. The entire zocalo has been taken over several times and when that happens, you don't want to be staying in el centro. Maybe someone here lives in Oaxaca and can give an update.

I live in Oaxaca but the problem with recommending or reviewing hotels is that I don't stay in them, so my comments are second-hand from travelers that I know or have talked to. The B&B website posted by Yucatandreamer is excellent. All of the B&Bs listed are good ones. I esp. recommend Casa Colonial. It is within walking distance of the zocalo, but on a side street. Las Mariposas, a bit more budgety, is also a good choice. Each one has a different ambience and amenities.

Tip #1: the prices posted on the Internet may be (1) out of date or (2) not representative of seasonal fluctuations.
Tip #2: Rooms within hotels often vary GREATLY.
Tip #3: Unless you are familiar with the city, it's difficult to evaluate the location.
Tip #4: Often if you make reservations on the Internet, you pay in USD and that sometimes increases the rate.

If you find a hotel and you want my opinion, please PM me, with specific questions that you want answered.

The selection of a hotel in Oaxaca can be daunting. There are hundreds. Even though occupancy may be down, the hotels don't seem to lower their prices, in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all replies to my posting.

I have visited Oaxaca twice before but am only somewhat "familiar" with the city. Still it is tremendously helpful.
(I have been there during the teacher strike in 2005 as well as during holy week prior to that.)
The strike was miserable...entire city strung up with blue tarps obscuring views of the city and its architecture, dangerous tent strings tied everywhere and difficult to see in poor lighting...and a concern for sanitation issues.
The problem is that my tickets have been purchased as this is done far in advance and the strikes can literally pop up in a day.
Anyone wishing to add to this has my attention.

I am running into high prices and less than satisfactory reviews for hotels on line. I stayed across from the zocalo
at Hotel Monte Alban. Not all that great, really...hot water problems as well...but the location was awesome. They don't seem to have a web site or email that I can find.
I hope to find something more mid range...but pleasant enough and not too noisy. Thats asking a lot! But hopefully some of these leads will be exactly what saves me from the on line nightmare of searching out a decent hotel.
