Has anyone any opinions about Sahuayo as a place for a retired couple to live? We live in Canada, but it gets quite cold during the winter months. Parts of the U.S. are warmer, but the cost of health care (whether doctor bills or insurance premiums) seems exorbitant.

I know there are fewer people from Canada or the U.S. there than in, say, Ajijic. But what about the usual conveniences, food shopping, medical care, telephone service, Internet, etc.? Any advice would be welcome.

Not that I know ANYTHING about Sahuayo, but I'll bet the above it the biggest understatement ever uttered around Lakeside.

On our recent trip in August, we had Sahuayo on our list of places to visit and did so on August 19th. While we were unsuccessful at finding much in the way of art and crafts, I did manage to take a few fotos:

This type of small town in Mexico would be very difficult to adjust to unless you have a Mexican family member or are otherwise fluent in the Spanish language and Mexican culture.

The English-language Sahuayo website says it has "lots of friendly and bilingual people". Should I believe them?

Yes--there are bilingual people everywhere in Mexico (and the world) and the people of Michoacan have always seemed especially friendly to me. That will not affect your daily life. I live in Irapuato--a city of 500,000 with thousands of bilingual people and several universities, etc. Nevertheless, I need to speak Spanish to get through my daily life. If you speak Spanish well, you could survive anywhere in Mexico, but you will still have to adjust a lot.

Oftentimes 'bilingual' means Spanish and an indigenous language such as Nahuatl or Purhépecha.

Assuming the two languages are Spanish and English can make for a rude awakening.

Hey! That is the area I visit when I go to Mexico. No where touristy..just good old Jiquilpan and Sahuayo, they are both neighboring cities. I am usually there in December. I remember Sahuayo as being more congested during that month. They do have a Soriana-which is fairly new- and and Aurrera (Walmart warehouse type) store. Also a McDonald's...
During the busy season we always park in Aurrera's parking lot and get a taxi to the centro.
The weather is very nice during the winter months.

If I remember correctly, there are knife makers there who do some fine and sought after work. Do you know of this?

If people go and visit, rent for extended period of time, say a year plus.
In many of these smaller cities, towns, villages in Mexico.

They'll learn. Of a whole 'nother world. From where they come from.
