Outdoor lighting sconces

Any ideas of where to look for exterior lighting? I am looking for wall sconces for an outdoor patio. Thanks so much!

You will find two types in Tonala the metal types and the clay ones. The clay ones ae around 70 to 150 pesos the metal vary greatly depending on style and type of metal. Then you can always find contemporary ones at Home Depot type of stores.

If I may be so bold as to expand on the above comments, we have done some extensive searching of wall sconces as possible import items for the U.S. market.

Clay sconces: There are numerous shapes, designs and styles.
Talavera scones: While it seems that the number of shops selling Talavera have decreased over the years, there are still a few that still carry a varied selection and this would include sconces. On a recent visit to Dolores Hidalgo - we certainly saw many more being offered.
Metal sconces: Essentially there are three types of metal sconces we have seen in Tonala - punched tin, punched copper and a steel (or similar metal) with a design cutout and various finishes.
Metal & glass sconces: My best description of these would be that they are shaped like a mask with a metal framework holding a slumped multi-color glass mask.

If I was not in the middle of rescuing info off a dying computer and transferring to a new computer, I could find some individual fotos of some sconces from Tonala. The best I can do is the following: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30112316@N06/sets/72157607163546809/show/
In the slideshow, there are some basic metal variety and the mask variety that I mentioned.

I was wondering if either Neil or chinagringo could be more specific about where in Tonala I could look. I love the metal sconces, but I live in Mazatlan, and they would rust in about 10 minutes there, so I need either the talavera or the terracotta ones. I am in Tlaquepaque right now, and I went to Tonala today. While I went into about 50 shops (at least it seemed like it), I only saw one store with the terracotta sconces, and they only had 3 of them, and I need more. I did find a place in Tlaquepaque with the talavera ones, but at the moment I'm leaning toward the terracotta. I know it's hard to give directions, but if you could point me in the right direction for clay sconces, I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much for your help on this forum!

I really wish that I could give directions to the exact shop where we saw clay sconces but I am one of those people that finds my way by visual landmarks and not actual addresses. Therefore I am horrible at giving directions!

That said, I do remember the name of one main street - Zaragoza. It would be to your right off the main drag and takes you up to the main plaza with the church. As I remember it, there are a number of shops either directly on this street or within a block to either your right or left where you might find the sconces you are looking for. Keep in mind, that these shops can often make additional product appear if they have an hour or two to round it up. They also should extend you a multiple unit discount.

Since you expressed a rusting problem with the metal sconces, I just thought of another option. If you are heading up Zaragoza - one block before you reach the street leading to the plaza. Down a half block to your right on the left side - you will find an Onix or Onyx shop. They have lots of options in onyx wall sconces.

Neil,

Thanks for the information. Don't worry about the directions - most of the streets aren't marked anyway!

And I did end up finding just what I wanted. We actually missed our turn to Tonala as we were driving from Tlaquepaque - when we made a u-turn to come back, we passed a factory where they make everything in clay, so it must have been fate. They had everything we wanted, and then some!

We went out to eat at a nice restaurant Tuesday night in Tlaquepaque, and they had some onyx sconces there. They were beautiful, but too fancy for what we were looking for. I really liked them though.

I am glad that you were able to find sconces that fit your needs! How did you make out in your pursuit of cement tile?

I understand what you mean about onyx sconces being somewhat specialized for certain locations. For future reference, you might enjoy some fotos that I took of product in the Onix Shop in Tonala. At the present time, I am uploading all my fotos off and old computer up to Flickr and will provide you with the link when done.
