Confederates in Mexico

I think some ex-Confederates settled in Mexico around Veracruz. Did the settlements survive and are there any descendants ?

Things did not work out so well for those Confederates who did go. Most went with very serious misimpressions about what was going to happen when they got there (they were going to start new plantations and have new slaves to work them), not enough money to get a real start, no Spanish or willingness to learn it, and no idea what life in Mexico was really like (All of this sound familiar?). As a result, the majority left for other ports (England and Brazil and Texas), others assimilated and faded into the Mexican culture and history, and some had the misfortune to get caught in other Mexican events of the 1860's and were annihilated. Plots by the Confederate States to annex Northern Mexico during the Civil War did not work out too well, either. Lots of scholarly writing in University history studies on these topics.
