When I first moved to Oaxaca, about 12 years ago, I was freelance writing (travel and business articles). I spent one winter in Oaxaca, armed with assignments in which I had done the interviews, research, and photography, so all I had to do was write the articles. After a few months, I decided that I could indeed live in Oaxaca on the meager pension I had at the time, without continuing to earn money writing. As weird as it may seem, in 1997 editors, for the most part, didn't accept manuscripts by email. (Now most of them, I think, prefer that work be sent via email). If, however, I were doing it today, I'd be able to continue my freelance writing via email and the Internet. That is what I would suggest to you, if you need to earn income from writing/editing. As you well know, you need connections in this business and I think it would be difficult to make those connections before you get to Mexico. Much, in fact practically all, business is done on a personal, face-to-face basis. Once you live in Oaxaca, you will no doubt make connections and find some work locally. There IS a need for English writers/editors. I'm assuming since you posted in English, that English is your first language. Since I no longer write for money, I have no leads to share with you. Sorry. You DO need to make the commitment to live in Mexico, before you will find work here. At least that is my opinion.
