When I first moved to Oaxaca, about 12 years ago, I was freelance writing (travel and business articles). I spent one winter in Oaxaca, armed with assignments in which I had done the interviews, research, and photography, so all I had to do was write the articles. After a few months, I decided that I could indeed live in Oaxaca on the meager pension I had at the time, without continuing to earn money writing. As weird as it may seem, in 1997 editors, for the most part, didn't accept manuscripts by email. (Now most of them, I think, prefer that work be sent via email).

If, however, I were doing it today, I'd be able to continue my freelance writing via email and the Internet. That is what I would suggest to you, if you need to earn income from writing/editing. As you well know, you need connections in this business and I think it would be difficult to make those connections before you get to Mexico. Much, in fact practically all, business is done on a personal, face-to-face basis. Once you live in Oaxaca, you will no doubt make connections and find some work locally. There IS a need for English writers/editors. I'm assuming since you posted in English, that English is your first language. Since I no longer write for money, I have no leads to share with you. Sorry.

You DO need to make the commitment to live in Mexico, before you will find work here. At least that is my opinion.

I agree with Geri's perspective on this question. I am a freelance writer based in Oaxaca, but none of my paying gigs come from Mexico-based publications or editors. Everything is done by email, Skype and PayPal these days, making location irrelevant in terms of getting jobs and receiving pay.

Oaxaca and/or Mexico work to your advantage in terms of pitching stories and getting assignments if you are looking for work as a travel writer. Otherwise, you can send your clips and your pitches to editors regardless of your location.

The additional advantage of writing for Canadian/U.S./European publications is being paid in a currency other than pesos. Finally, if you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need a Mexican work visa to write for U.S. -based publications, whereas working for Mexican publications could pose some difficulty.

The "Freelance Writing Jobs" website posts daily leads for writers and editors.

Good luck,

As an active freelance writer, you explained it much better than I. If I weren't in such a "lazy retirement" mood, I'd give it a go, i.e. take a stab at freelancing again, because the Internet makes it possible.

The poster probably won't come back. Many post on discussion forums in a fit of discouragement re their present circumstances. That's also why some folk move to Mexico.

It's usually best to run TO something rather than AWAY from something. Again, just my opinion.
