Arming the LeBaron group sounds like "special rights" for gringos (or semi-gringos) to me, and hardly a solution to what may be a more serious problem. Does this even involve drugs? As I've said before, water rights and land use -- or simple greed -- are likely to cause community friction too. And, one thing not well publicized is that this group has been involved in extreme violence on both sides of the border before. Ervil LeBaron led a gang of killers on a rampage through Mexico and the U.s. that killed a number of people. I've heard from LeBaron colony defenders that Ervil was schitzophrenic, which may be true... but then his followers weren't. And, to call these people Mormons apparently offends some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As one scholar (and a believer in that faith) put it to me, "calling the LeBaron group 'Mormons' is like calling Santa Muerte 'Roman Catholics'." I'm not prepared to say the LeBaron group got sideways of drug dealers, or were involved in drug dealing, but I'm not about to say "poor pitiful folks -- give 'em guns" either. http://mexfiles.net http://voiceofmexico.com http://editorialmazatlan.com
