New term for me ... but I run into 3-4 new terms every day

Our 9 year old was so excited today that she got a BECA which I assume is a scholarship. She's in primary and tried to explain how many mil pesos ... but don't think she understood. Guess we'll see how much Mexico can help the family of a primary kid

This year and last, the government of Nayarit gave a beca to every child, I think it was 200 pesos each on a devit card. The government also provided some school supplies.
That was done for every child, not based on individual need.

In Vallarta there is a large Becas program, http://www.puerto-vallarta.com/amf, and every year they sponsor the Becas Ball. The group gives many scholarships to area kids, and it is done on basis of need.

Well in this case it's a combination of grades and need. Not sure how the money is distributed but it's for clothes and supplies. Sounds like less than 10% of the kids qualified

Actually I think Mexico does quite a bit to help primary kids. Congratulations for the success your own little one seems to be having!!

I didn't know what the program was actually called (sounds like a BECA), but when I lived in a Zoque Indian village in Chiapas about ten years ago, several times each year every primary school student was given a dozen or so live chicks to take home to the family and raise. It was a real kick watching them struggle home on those days with their boxes full of biddies!! I always wondered how many chicks even survived the walk from school to the house.

How lucky you are that your scholarship student was paid in pesos for her exceptional performance!!!!!!!!
