What is usually involved with installing a gas fireplace? I like those pretty Mexican styles. The fireplace would be located in a corner with an outside wall and the gas source is nearby, Thanks!

Use teflon tape and black iron gas pipe. Don't use other kinds of pipe including galvanized pipe. You need an adequate air source and venting.Carl Carlson

I see two problems:For safety, it should be vented to the outside which means punching through the wall or roof.The other is the cost of heating with bottle gas. Cheap it ain't.Carl is right about the black pipe being the best way, although most people here use a special flexible tubing which worries me.

anything like a gas stove, water heater, etc has to have a flexible section between the rigid pipe and the appliance. Even if you never cleaned behind it ... it give room for earthquake shaking.Don't need double wall exhaust pipe if building is brick/cement but you might scorch your wall paint. The further the exhaust pipe runs (inside) the more heat it will produce.You could always try a Kiva fireplace which usually sits in a corner. You might be able to adapt the exhaust to fit the house design.Kiva is Navajo-ish

Yes, Loco, I know about the need for a short piece of flex. What I'm talking about is the common pratice of many meters of a special plastic hose from the tank, along the outside wall, through the wall, and on to the stove, etc. I see this frequently, and it worries me.My friends assure me that they never heard of a house blowing up, but I still like a black metal pipe. Old fashioned, I guess.
