My wife, daughter and I plan on an extended stay in San Miguel de Allende. Does anyone know how many schools (public and private) are in SMA and any recomendations, thoughts, advice. Our daughter would be in the elementary grades. Thanks

There are several private elementary schools in San Miguel. Each one has its own specialty. Waldorf, bilingual, one on one. I think you just have to visit and see which one meets your childs needs. Archie Dean's book on living in San Miguel lists most of them.

Waldorf in SMA

The Walsorf school in SMA is truly bilingual from what I hear with roughly 1/2 of the students speaking each language. If you are looking for more of a total immersion experience you may want to look elsewhere. For a gentler exposure this would be nice. I have no idea about the others.

I have three boys in elementary school here in San Miguel. There are many options for education. The "right" school choice depends on many factors such as:
- Family situation (single parent? siblings?..)
- Previous educational situation (public, religious, Waldorf, Home School, etc.)
- Personal goals(language aquisition, engage in culture, visit....)
- Child's disposition and adaptation skills
- Length of stay
We currently have our children in a private Catholic school (total immersion). Other total immersion options include the public schools. Many bilingual options exists. Some are English speaking kids trying to learn Spanish and a couple are Spanish speaking kids trying to learn English. A newer school also teaches some languages other than Spanish.
Our kids just started school this August, so we are still adjusting. Feel free to email us directly if you are interested in what we have found and experienced.

We are also considering bringing our family to live for an extended stay in San Miguel. Possibly, our 8 year old would start 4th grade in San Miguel. Currently, our son attends 3rd Catholic school in the U.S.

When you speak of total immersion study in a Catholic School, does this mean that the school is completely taught in Spanish. If so, is there any accomodation of the english speeking student during the time the spanish language is being learned?

Did you children know some spanish prior to enrolling?

How are your children doing in this experience?

Thanks for any information,

Bruce and Sharon
