We have an old well on our property and are having it cleaned out. The workers say they need to go another meter and a half and will put bricks around the circumference. How the heck are these old wells held up? This all seems dangerous, is there support that should be put at the base, or are these wells made so they support themselves?

I assume this is not the "wishing well" type or the "bucket 'n rope" kind you can fall into. The link below is similar to my brothers well. <p>Sand and loose rock (glacial terrain) close to the water table required PVC liner.
