My guess is that you don't see Mexican women over 65 with muffin tops over their jeans because they don't live that long - those muffins'll do you in every time.

I have to admit to admiring the mindset that just accepts their bodies as they are and thinks that J-Lo butts are the best. On the other hand, I worry about the middle aged and older Mexican women in small towns who do not exercise or watch their nutrition.

In Guadalajara the "fresas" are all in great shape - even the ones that are getting slightly moldy a they age. (For the uninitiated, "fresas" is a tapatio word for young, manicured, made up, primped, coiffed, fashionably dressed, pampered young ladies in the latest style clothing, with what appears to be 7 inch high heels.) The city women have a better diet and they do exercise. No muffin tops there! But women in the pueblos have a poorer diet and the concept of exercise for health is not there. They are bent over and exhausted in many cases from a life of many children and hard domestic work and a diet of tortillas, lard, and Coca Cola.

Georgia...that's probably true for women everywhere. The poor have the worst diets and get the heaviest, as a rule. And die younger. I know a woman from NOB who moved down to the southern beach area in Chiapas. She told people she was 46 though she is much older, but everybody believed her since Chiapas women seldom live to be even that age.

Completely off thread.....but IMO, the marketing of soft drinks with so much success to Mexicans as well as others throughout the world should be punishable by ....something painful.
Then, they compounded it by selling "diet" drinks that only confused the metabolism.
Grrr. End of rant.

Now, about those 7 inch heels. Trooping across the cobblestones streets in them. Mystery.
Maybe Mexican girls are born with genes for this. Not only that, they don't LOOK. Double mystery.

They give them training wheels for high heels when they learn to walk. I asked.

Well, those 7" heels are hot among the younger set here, but I don't see over-50s hobbling around in them. What I do see are Crocs (real or fake) on women from six to sixty, and the stores are full of them. Anybody else have that? Male Crocophiles seem to be teenage or younger and tend to choose black, navy, gray, beige, etc. But for women of all ages, it's red, lime green, yellow, orange, even shocking pink.

How do you want to be treated?

Even if you live here, no matter what you do, you're not going to "pass" for Mexican. While there are all kinds of rationales for wearing -- or not wearing -- certain items (or for wearing clothes at all!), it comes down to how you want to be seen. I do wear shorts when I'm in the tourist zone, but then I expect to be treated as a tourist and get accosted by every time-share tout in town. If I dress like a local business person (still comfortable for the tropics), the touts don't bother me (assuming I don't do the gringo trot -- that self-absorbed robotic speed walking endemic to the regions north of the Rio Bravo).

In my own 'hood, if I walk out on the porch in my boxer shorts, but then again, I can't kick if my neighbors think I'm kinda Naco.

Crocs: are actually worn by both Mexican men and women whose feet are sensitive, meaning they do not have much padding on the soles of their feet. Apparently, podiatrists recommend them for such a condition.

A friend of ours had a bad fall at home one day last week. I took her to the hospital, the fanciest one in town. The triage doctor in the ER was wearing sparkling white Crocs.

Yup, a lot of doctors, surgeons especially, who are on their feet a lot wear them down here. I have a friend who is a surgeon here who swears by them.

I'm not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV), but I wear Crocs almost every day.

I keep mine sparkling like-new clean with one of those waxy no-color shoe polish sponges sold at Farmacia Guadalajara, Wal-Mart, Soriana, and many other places.

All that is interesting to know. I also find Crocs very comfortable but didn't know that they were particularly good for the feet. I just wash mine with soap and water. The knock offs in Tres Hermanos are only about 70 pesos, but mine melted when I left them in the sun, so I bought real ones. With the strap, I can even drive in them. Just saw a woman at the segunda yesterday wearing shocking pink ones.

Well Rolly, that's about my attitude also, BUT my Mexican wife thinks it's criminal and won't go out in public with me unless I wear long pants. LOL

I was just sent the attached photo with the following, "Your wife is right and you're wrong. Here's the proof."

Just saw a woman yesterday wearing bright yellow crocs, but with a twist: she had matching yellow socks, pulled up.

I don't like crocs myself because they're plastic and your feet get slimy hot. Maybe the yellow socks solved it.

I always wear my Crocs with socks. I've never tried yellow ones, though--Crocs OR socks.

Might as well wear your yellow or any other colored CROC now as the company appears to be on the "endangered company list"!

Hey there G-Gal......(modified to address the PC issues on forum)

I agree with you about "HOT" Crocs.

Try a Croc "flip-flop" which is one of my favorites. Be sure it is a REAL Croc item as the knock-offs are inferior. I find them to be a terrific Mexi-street sandal (which includes traversing cobblestones).

I am a flip flop nut...can't find a better foot-wear IMO. The best one I have found is the Rabbit Kekai sandal from Hawaii - sold on-line at REI. Durable and VERY comfy!

Happy Feet nurture a Happy Soul! Enjoy the walk!

That's a cool PC modification. Like "G-men".

Can't wear Crocs or their cousins anyway. Hafta have a thick, stubby 2" heel. For me, they made San Miguel Shoes. Work fine on cobblestones. Plus, no socks needed. Saves a buck.
