Thanks, jerezano. I wasn't aware that this project was happening.

I'm wondering about its scope.... not the dam but the resulting lake behind it. If it is going to be the 2nd tallest dam in the world it has got to have a large body of water behind it!

I am aware that the Rio Santiago feeds Presa Aguamilpas which is a huge lake NE of Tepic. I am also aware that that lake has some fantastic fishing. This new La Yesca dam and resulting lake (named yet?) will be closer to Guadalajara (100 miles?) and could provide some decent bass fishing etc. within the reach of Lakeside (and thus be another incentive for moving there for some [as if that's needed!]).

I realize that the conclusion of all of this, even if it moves forward without regard to current economic conditions, is still quite a way into the future.... but it is the future that guides me, not the past.

Any more information Sir jerezano?

Hello RickS,

You asked:>>Any more information? [on La Yesca Dam]

Here is the contract award notice from September 2008 and a tentative schedule with a description of the eventual lake:
.................
By Catherine Bremer

MEXICO CITY, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, awarded Mexican building company ICA a $768 million contract on Thursday to build one of the world's tallest dams to help meet Mexico's growing electricity needs.

ICA (ICA.MX)(ICA.N) had presented the lowest offer for the La Yesca dam, ahead of a $811.2 million offer by Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim's infrastructure company IDEAL (IDEALB1.MX).

Italy's Impregilo (IPGI.MI) and its consortium partners offered to build the dam for $855.98 million.

ICA, Mexico's largest construction company and which now has 15 days to sign the contract, described the project as "key to Mexico's development" and said it had arranged financing for the project, which will be structured by WestLB bank.

"Work will start on September 27 and the finish date is July 11, 2012," said Jose Franco, deputy director of concessions at the CFE.

One of the biggest projects launched by former President Vicente Fox, La Yesca will be 722 feet (220 meters) high with a basin of 2,390 million cubic meters, the equivalent of Mexico City's water consumption over two years.

Its 750-megawatt hydroelectric generation capacity will be enough to power 12.5 million lightbulbs, according to the CFE.

La Yesca will be built on the Santiago River, near the border of the western coastal states of Jalisco and Nayarit and construction should generate 10,000 direct jobs.

ICA is partnered by Promotora e Inversora Adisa, La Peninsula Compania Constructora and Constructora de Proyectos Hidroelectricos in the dam concession.

Last November, the CFE rejected bids in a first auction because they were above a ceiling price set by the government or failed to meet technical requirements.

Interesting ... they are building one on the Jalisco/Colima border as well on the Marabasco river. We've made several trips up there and it will produce electricity. Sounds much smaller than La Yesca, earth fill but has a long valley to fill some day. Improving the infrastructure of Mexico is not a joke it seems

Hello Sparks et. al.,

Presa Naranjo II on the Marabasco River is discussed here

http://www.periodicoelsur.com/...aspx?idnoticia=19572

It apparently will be for irrigation. I haven't yet found anything on the other dam which Sparks tells us is being constructed on the Jalisco/Colima border for the generation of electricity. Is that one on the Marabasco river too?

There is already an irrigation diversion dam near Cihautlan that channels water to both states (both sides of the river). We spoke to an engineer on the Presa Naranjo II project and that's where I got the electrical generation idea. Hard to tell what's really going on when looking at all the foundation work .... but this is not a small project.

I suppose it could be to supply water to Manzanillo and the Melaque areas which are drier and definately for flood control. Hyway 200 was washed out and lots of crop damage a few years ago

Hello All,

I have been informed today March 20, 2009, the first day of Spring, that President Calderon recently made some remarks about La Yesca dam and that those remarks have been reported in the Guadalajara Reporter. That is a subscription site and I am not a subscriber so I cannot tell you what was said. Perhaps one of you is a subscriber and can summarize the information for us.

Bulletin: Through another source I was able to read the article. Here it is:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Massive curtain dam gathers steam Written by GR Staff Saturday, 21 March 2009
JALISCO - President Felipe Calderon joined Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez and Nayarit Governor Ney Gonzalez Sanchez last week to launch the deviation of the Santiago River that will permit construction of the La Yesca dam wall.
President Felipe Calderon and Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez look over a mock up of the Yesca Dam project during their visit to the site last week.La Yesca, a 750-megawatt hydroelectric project, will be the world’s second tallest dam when finished – an impressive 220 meters high.
Once completed, the dam will generate one and a half times the energy consumed by the state of Nayarit and approximately 15 percent of that used by Jalisco.
Work on La Yesca started in January 2008. Together with the nearby El Cajon Dam – begun during the previous administration – La Yesca will “place Mexico at the forefront of the clean electricity generation,” Calderon said.
Located on the border of Jalisco and Nayarit, La Yesca is being constructed by Mexican company ICA at a cost of 768 million dollars. The expected finish date is July 2012.
La Yesca’s basin will contain 2,390 million cubic meters of water, the equivalent of Mexico City’s water consumption over two years.
Calderon said the dam has created 5,000 direct jobs and approximately 15,000 indirect ones.

Hello all,

And here is some information on the El Cajon dam some 37 miles from La Yesca. This dam was also constructed to generate electricity and may be the other hydroelectric dam that Sparks mentioned. From the google earth picture of the dam it is really isolated with a long canyon lake bed. This dam seems a bit isolated for fishing, but then fishermen tend to go everywhere.
