I know nothing about construction and have been facinated watching your project come together-- one quick question- how do they pour the treads/risers on the ramp? do you have any photos of that part? can't wait to see the next batch of photos! thanks Rolly!

:how do they pour the treads/risers on the ramp?
I was looking forward to that scene myself. I am really PO'ed because I missed it. The guys said they would do the pour first thing on Thursday morning, but when I got there at 8:00am, it was done. The stinkers had done the pour Wednesday night; they worked until 10:30pm. We have 3 more sets of stairs to do, so I'll get the pour pictures later.

: Off the wall – Who was Sir Ernest Shackleton and why was he cold?
:Shackleton was one of the first explorers to venture to the South Pole and he was cold because the temperature here in Antarctica was -114 below last week, including the wind chill factor. Three more months of ice and then it's back to sunny Mexico to begin building our own casa!

Shackleton

Hola cold man,
It's good to know the internet is alive and well in Antarctica.
Shackleton is most famous for not making it to the south pole when his ship, Endurance, got stuck in the ice and broke up. One of the greatest adventure stories of all time followed as he struggled for 20 months to bring his crew to safety without a single loss of life.
For lovers of adventure stories, I recommend “The Endurance” by Caroline Alexander. The pictures alone are worth the US$30 price. There is also a great I-Max film that tells this story.

Rolly,
Thanks again for your report. I am in the process
of having a wall built and the price/ft seems
to be about the same. I think I will be able to
roughly use your numbers for my house also. One
question, why buy your own lumber? Or didnt
the house builder has any? The guy who is being
recommended for me has a good rep and plenty of
lumber. tony
: This week we did the stairs to the second level and got a good start on erecting the forms for the second floor slab for the south house.
: For the whole story, go to Rollybrook.com
: To skip to the new stuff, click below
:

The explanation was 2 or 3 weeks back. Basically, it was to save money. Since we have four slab pours to do, having our own form lumber is cheaper than hiring a crew to bring in their lumber and set the forms. When we are done with the lumber, it has a re-sale value, thus increasing the savings.

Rolly,
Missed the first explanation. Smart move, good
call, especially doing the resale
. It sounds like you are doing this very hands
on.
: The explanation was 2 or 3 weeks back. Basically, it was to save money. Wampum and borrowing

And if you've got storage space, having your own construction vigas makes for good wampum. Like lending them out in exchange for the use of someone else's dump truck! Depending upon what kind of community you live in, of course, there may be some element of borrowing and lending of infrequently used implements. My ownership of an extension ladder has saved me from having to rent a heavy-duty dolly multiple times.

We are doing a bit of that. Our neighbor is letting us use his land for a staging area -- storage of materials -- in return for clearing out the original debris and our stuff when we are done. We are sharing water and tools with another neighbor. The little store across the street has been very glad to see us – we’ve made a big boost in their business.
But another neighbor across the street probably has not been too happy with out activities. He has managed to back into two of our vehicles while getting out of his garage. I bet his insurance company is upset with him. I haven’t seen the old man driving lately; I think his son took the keys away from him. Makes me wonder when I’ll have to give up driving. Old age sure ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.
