Permanent importation of US registered cars: 2009

  | Private Reply
Here we go again: but it is a new year, sort of. Now, my auto insurance provider tells me, as have other Mexicans, that it is possible to permanently import US plated cars, even if they are not brand new, as long as they are NOT more than 10 years old. Mexico, they say, no longer wants old NOB clunkers littering the countryside.

The aduana website hasn't been updated for 2009. Husband and I would like to convert to imigrado status this year and then will not be permitted to maintain US plated cars here. So.................... does anyone know if this rumored change in the permanent importation of US plated cars (that is, cars that can become Mexican plated even if they are used imported US cars) has any basis in fact???? Travis, are you out there??? Sometimes at aduana you get different responses from different people who don't bother to keep up with the newest rules.

I've heard the same thing since last October. However someone yesterday told me that the law enabling this importation was rescinded.

A few days ago there was an article in my local paper about a law suit that was before the supreme court challenging some unspecified parts of the new aduana law/rules.

Travis is working to help me nationalize my pickup. Things have been more or less at a standstill because of confusion over the new rules.

I hope Travis has news he can share with us.

OK. Just checked the aduana site again: apparently a "persona fisica" - in other words a private citizen or person, can import, permanently, one new vehicle in a year with no more than 1000 km. on it but must pay a mountain of taxes. We have two US plated cars that we want to trade in on one new car. Obviously, we can't do it in Mexico. I figure the US car dealers are anxious to "make a deal" - so, I'm thinking we should trade in the two very good cars, and buy a new one and bring it down and legally import it and pay the mountain of taxes. I think we still might come out ahead. Ah, and then there's the patriotic act of buying a car in this time of trouble. (ignore last statement as facetious please)

Has anyone out there ever done it? Advice? Twists and turns?

I have given up trying to nationalize my 12-year old pickup. I've asked Travis to return my paperwork. I hated to do that, but it seems like it will be a long time, if ever, before older vehicles will be nationalized again.

The congress has asked Calderón to resend his recent rule on older vehicles, but I don't want to hold my breath any longer.

Rolly, was it difficult to nationalize because you aren't a Mexican citizen? Just wondering. I thought 10 yr and older were the easiest for anyone to nationalize.

"...was it difficult to nationalize because you aren't a Mexican citizen?" Not difficult, impossible. The title has to be signed over to a Mexican citizen.

The rules have changed dramatically. Now only cars less than 10 years old can be nationalized.

That was my understanding, also. Because they didn't want old clunkers polluting the country both visually and from a safety and air quality stanpoint.

But what about a brand. new, US made car? Before they are extinct.

Is this cars & trucks or just cars?

Whoa. So, if I sign my vehicles over to a Mexican citizen, he or she can legally import a four year old car and/or a five year old car???

This is what confuses me but I get that you are saying the laws changed. Just having a hard time understanding why cars less than 10 yrs old are now allowed to be nationalized.
I thought (wrongly perhaps) that the reason for the "must be 10 yrs or older law" was to thwart car thieves from bringing a hot new car into Mexico illegally? Now the law has changed for an aesthetic reason?

I'm more curious to know if this new law of nationalizing cars LESS than 10 yrs applies only to American cars? Wonder if I can take my 2007 Hyundai next time?

Georgia,

Now that I remember, that is what we did. I signed my car over to hubby and he nationalized it in no time. We couldn't do it in my name (this was in January of 2008). But my visa expired and was in renewal process at that time. I assumed one could do it if they had the correct visa. Looks like that isn't the case from Rolly's post.

New and near-new cars are being allowed in because of a NAFTA rule kicking on 1 Jan 09.

Older cars are being excluded because Calderón doesn't want a bunch of old clunkers (like mine) coming in.

Got it. OK. So. my friends take title to my car in the US, and import it into Mexico in their names. Retitle it to me. Save big $$$$$.

One more little fly in the soup -- when the title is transfered back to you, there will be a tax to pay. I don't know how it is calculated. A car dealer can probably tell you.

Georgia, according to a Mexican friend who has been importing cars fairly regularly for family members, the costs are suddenly out of this world.

Marlene, Which costs are suddenly out of this world? The costs to your Mexican friend to nationalize? Anyone have a website on this info or at least tell me what to google?

Apparently there have been some big changes. The cars are now being evaluated at higher prices. You have to pay both a tax and the IVA. This will kill all that importation as it will be cheaper to buy Mexican vehicles.
