Judy,

Do you get the higher speed internet service from Telmex?

No, our Infinitum charge is 346.96 a month. I hope you can get something worked out. It's rotten not having good phone service.

Any idea why most of these posts have a fast download speed and much slower upload while my results are just the opposite?

That is certainly asynchronous with a twist. I've never seen that.

I know I could go on line and look it up and I will if no one here remembers. But do any of you remember the minimum speed requirements for SKYPE?

I have been told that Vonage has higher speed requirements than SKYPE, but that you can change the compression settings on Vonage which gives up a little high fidelity but lowers the bandwidth or speed requirements, but that even at these changed settings Skype does better.

Where did I get this info? From a few techie friends. Do any of you have the facts?

Me? I use www.IconnectHere.com. Is it any better than the other VoIP services? Heck I don't know. I like it though and it only costs me $14.95 per month

S&C, I noticed your 'bas-akwards' upload/download speeds on your first post. Strange. But you said, having no landlines available, that you were using a microwave dish on your roof pointing to 'someone'. They may be using a similar form of wireless that one of the Ajijic ISPs provides. That would make your connection dissimilar to anything most of us use.

I would bring that anomoly up to your ISP. No telling what they may be doing to 'throttle' download speeds in order to serve you and other customers. Or it may just be what happens when a lot of people are connected to a wireless service of a certain capacity, downloading more than the 'pipe' can handle. Uploading would present less of a problem (and therefore have a faster overall speed) as we don't usually put as much pressure on what we send like we do with what we receive.

Pete, have you seen this with Lagunanet's wireless service?

Try that again. That's just weird.

Does Skype offer anything like MJ? I like using a regular ol' phone that rings and can be dialed so my kids can use it.

BTW I put five bucks into MJ's long-distance plan & got 55 minutes to Mexico. Telmex cut-off our land line (late paying the bill) but the DSL still worked.

The reason Rick asked me that question is that he knows that often when I am in Mexico I donate my mornings giving free tech support at an ISP (internet service provider). Until about May or June of 1997, there was no internet lakeside (Lake Chapala) unless you phoned long distance to Guadalajara, a rather expensive option in those days. I arrived lakeside that year, purchased a house and hooked up to Lagunanet's dialup service, then several years later, and this is a real guess in about 2000 or 2001 they offered the first high speed internet service lakeside, well at least that is what they called it. They offered both 64 and 128 K connections where the speed both up and down were synchronous or the same and often in those days you would see upload speeds that were regularly faster than the download speeds.

Every few months the speeds would double and these days, the highest download speeds are approaching 3 meg. However the download speeds for many years now have been closer to about 1/3 the upload speeds. Sure there might be that one time in 1000 when your upload speeds were faster than your download speeds, but that example is really weird.

Another interesting trend is that whatever the advertised speeds are at lagunanet, often one would get faster speeds in the middle of the night and slower speeds during periods of high usage, like at 10 AM or 4 PM. Now things always get terribly slow starting about 3 weeks before Christmas until about New Years. Things also get slow when the stock market crashes etc.

But in answer to your question, I am puzzled why the upload speeds are so much faster than the download speeds. And if I got the same results as S&C I would spend all kinds of time trying to figure out why. But that's just me.

Rick,

I certainly appreciate you taking the time and making the effort with this matter. Of course it would never put me down in any way. Some of your suggestions make perfect sense and I really should have thought of them on my own. I will definitely do a few of them, in logical order, to make sure I have done everything I can do to solve this problem, or at least to determine if there is a solution.

Unfortunately, some of your suggestions are not possible. For example, I don't a soul here who has high speed internet at home.

Anyway, before this gets longer than necessary, as is frequently the case with me, I will thank you again for your suggestions.

Here in Baja on Infinitum 2meg I consistently average over 2000 down and near 300 up.

I guess it just shows how things have changed. When we moved here you had to call long distance to GDL to connect to the internet. It still isn't good but is MUCH BETTER.

Jerry, you wrote "When we moved here you had to call long distance to GDL to connect to the internet." For those of you who do not know, Jerry lives lakeside and before June, 1997, there was no internet in the greater Ajijic, Chapala, Joco area, and you had to call long distance to connect to the internet. I came here after Jerry, Aug. 1997, and I too, hooked up to dialup with Lagunanet. They offered high speed dialup, 33.6 Kb/sec and we thought that was great. Now we complain when the speeds are only ten times that fast.

Things are so much better now than they were in 1997, gee, I have seen speeds of 5.5 meg lakeside which is 5,500 Kb/sec or almost 200 times faster than what we had in the summer of 1997. And I don't need anything faster. The very high speeds I have here in Seattle are overkill. I can hardly get back to Mexico (home) next week.

I am a totally non-technical person who has only the most rudimentary knowledge of using the computer. I've scanned all these previous posts and it all looks like greek to me. I don't even know how to upload anything, although I think I know what that refers to. So my question is REALLY basic. Just in the most general of terms ( even a yes or no would suffice ) have any of you heard whether Tepic, Nyarit has decent and reliable, relatively speaking, internet service. I'm pretty sure I've seen posts that indicate Maz and La Paz are good on that score. We're looking at all 3 areas. Thanks!

Living here in San Felipe, I am unaware of any other internet service such as Infinitam. I don't think Telnor offers it :). So, is it available here?

That depends where you are in the area. There is DSL/Infinitum service available in the town of San Felipe but outside of town maybe not. Just check with Telnor and ask them. If not, there are satellite options for internet service there. I know one guy living a ways south of San Felipe and I can check what service he is using and report back to you...

I have had TelMex prodigy for around five years. I pay 399 pesos a month for what is advertised as a gig dowload and 256 K upload service. This is what I typically get. Location, Villa Nova, Ajijic

When I go to http://www.telmex.com/mx/hogar/in_infinitum_pyp.html

I see the 512 costs $389, the 1 meg costs costs $599 and the 2 meg costs $999. That also includes phone service. The max upload speed on the 1 meg is Hasta or up to 128 and the Max upload on the 2 Meg is up to 256 kb/sec.

On the 1 Meg connection typically one would get 70 to 80% of the 1 meg over 128k maximum speed. At least that was the case several months ago here along the shores of Lake Chapala. There would always be those exceptions though. I hope that helps.
