I have a buddy visiting in January who likes to fish. Are there any deep water lakes for bass fishing?

One suggestion would be Cajon de Peña (stocked with Florida large mouth bass)!

I eat at the restaurant just before the damn. The bass is good there and the owner makes a good tequila he might share with you.

The turn is about a hours drive south of PV. If you are coming south from PV and you get to Tomatlan you passed it by about 1o miles, but you can visit Tomatlan as it is a nice little town. See:

As you may already know, there aren't many 'bass fishing lakes' in Jalisco or surrounds. Another one that it not technically in Jalisco but close by in the state of Nayarit is Aqua Milpa. It is about an hour north of Tepic which is a couple of hours northwest of Guadalajara. See:

Can anyone fill me in on the public access to these lakes, is it open to anyone or do you need a permit/permission or what ? Licence required ?

On Cajon de Peña access is open. There is a boat ramp available if you have a boat. Shoe line iifshing is plentiful. I would suggest a guide and use his boat to save you the trouble of hauling yours, at least the first time. This is a pretty lake with a lot of trees/stumps in it so you would have to know a bit about the lake to boat in it.

A fishing license is required to fresh water fish.
