Sim Cards in cell phones

I didn't see an answer for this so maybe someone can help.
I have a Motorola cell phone I use in Mexico with the Telcel pay-as-you-go cards. It is beginning to act up and may need to be replaced shortly. Rather than get a new phone and new number and then have to let everyone know the new number, etc., can I just take the sim card out of this Telcel phone and put it into a Nokia that I brought down from the states and keep the same telephone number?

The way I understand it, the sim card is the brain that holds the phone number and carrier info. The sim cards of the 2 phones look the same size and each phone is a basic down and dirty unit. (No camera, etc)

Is this correct or wishful thinking.
Thanks
Stan

As I understand it, if you take a phone from one country to another and try to trade chips, it can only be done if your phone is unlocked. Normally phones are locked, and will not accept other chips, or I have been told. A friend was able to pay a technician to unlock his US purchased iPhone for I think $400 pesos in Guadalajara.

I am not an expert on the subject. So should someone else wish to add to my comments or correct me, please do so.
