As the body count in Mexico's war on the drug cartels continues to
rise, one might lose sight of the reason so many are willing to fight
and die on the side of the criminals. Unlike in earlier years when
the capos actually acted as their own assassins e.g. Ramon Arellano
Felix, or US gang members served as mercenaries such as San Diego's
Barrio Logan gang, today's recruits come from the very poorest in
