Your construction postings are a real education! Thanks, Rolly. The labor costs are listed at $1994 and social security payments at $3312. How are social security taxes calculated? And how does the builder or homeowner actually make payment?

SS stuff

The labor number you quoted ($1994) is the cost thus far of the south roof. The SS number ($3312) is for the total project to date.
How the SS is calculated is a mystery to me. My partner in this undertaking, Enrique, asked that question at the SS office and was basically told that it was too complicated for him to understand. Welcome to Mexico. After looking at their billing printouts, it may indeed be too complicated.
We register each worker at the SS office giving them his salary amount per week. Each month a bill from the SS is hand delivered to Enrique’s house. We pay the bill at the bank. These charges are broken into two bills. Each month we pay a charge for the SS IMSS, and every second month we pay another charge for the SS what ever.
When a worker leaves the job, we file a change order. If a worker is sick or otherwise misses work, we must file a report if we want the SS charges adjusted for his missed days. Thus far we have not had to do that.
Early on in the project, we felt there was an error in the billing. Enrique complained to the office about it and was told, more or less, “Don’t tell us how to do our work.” Since the error amounted to only a few dollars, we let it go. Some things are just not worth fighting about.

We have a roof...

Here is what I said a few weeks ago on this subject.
>The original budget was US$100,000; that was the amount available as the family’s part of a California lottery winning. It now looks like the total will run more than that. We are developing contingency plans to deal with an over run. Items on the option list include water pressure pumps, pavers for the patio, paint on the stucco, floor tile in the bedrooms, and the swamp coolers. I worry about not being able to complete the project as planned, but the family does not seem too concerned. One of the sisters summed it when she said “I don’t need tile; I don’t need paint; I just need a house.” There is also a small chance that the uncle who won the lottery and is sharing the pot among four families, might be induced to increase this family’s share. We should have a pretty clear picture of what we will be able to complete when the roof is finished, probably by the end of this year.<
It now looks like the roof will be finished sooner. But we still don’t have a clear picture of what happens if/when the money runs out.
