Hotel in Guadalajara

I plan to spend a couple of days in Guadalajara, and am looking for a budget priced hotel in the centro historico. The Hotel Nueva Galicia gets good reviews on Trip Advisor. It is located on Av Corona near Av La Paz. Is anyone familiar with this hotel? How far is it from the Cathedral? Thanks, Dee

Dee, I don't know the hotel but I do know the area. It's about 10-12 blocks from the Cathedral in a section of town I'd feel comfortable walking in during the day but not at night.

You might also check out Hotel Francisco Plaza. It's closer to the Cathedral, should be relatively inexpensive, and lots of foreigners stay there.

There are two sides to the Francisco Plaza. The newer renovated one and the still stinky one. It's also two blocks into a more seedy area. Here are two more to check out, though more $$:

When we stayed at the San Francisco Plaza last year, our first room was lousy, but they moved us to a good room the following day. Any hotel is only as good or bad as the room they give you.

There is a taxi stand very close, also there is a bus line hub nearby, so transportation options are good, the TUR bus to Tlaquapaque and Tonala stops near there, etc. The walk to the center of town is through a not great shopping area, so would not recommend that walk late at night, after things close.

We liked the hotel, and would stay there again.

Hello,

I too like the Francisco Plaza. It does have parking spaces across the street. Also the Plaza itself is where the Calendarios (horse & buggy) have their stand. The two blocks to the main drag are a bit seedy, but so is much of New York City.

Hola Dee,

When researching 'digs' for my trip last winter to Guadalajara, passed on staying 'centro' although there were several B and B's that piqued interest but did not follow up on prior internet research.

Looking for lodging in the 80 dollars or so a night bracket, I ended up at a past favorite, Hotel Isabel near Templo Expiratorio, and walked, several times, centro, about ten blocks. And taken buses or taxis back.

Saw restaurant 'O' while meandering the neighbourhood. Although chose a Cuban and an East Indian restaurant, whose names escape me at this moment.

Also stayed in centro Tonala, both on arrival and departure from the airport. Somewhat budget. Cheap and cheerful. Safe and centrally located to the Thursday and Sunday tianguis. Interesting both times. But not 'too interesting', if you get my drift:)

The Cuban restaurant may well have been La Bodeguita del Medio.

The East Indian restaurant is Goa, the only East Indian restaurant in Guadalajara.

I liked the Hotel Frances it is opposite the Governor's Palace right in the center of things. It is the oldest hotel dated in the 1600's but full of character. The food wasn't the greatest when I stayed there.

The Hotel Francés is built around a central atrium, with all rooms facing the atrium.

Most nights, a mariachi band plays in the atrium till very late at night, especially on weekends. It's hard to get a good night's sleep at the Francés...

In the good old days, they used to have a grand piano under the atrium. I agree it was tough to get a night's sleep there but the location couldn't be better.

I did stay at San Francisco Plaza and will do so again. Although I had overnighted there once several years ago, I couldn't remember much about it. The service was helpful and friendly, and the price was great! They are having a "special" (at least if you call to reserve) and a single room is $510 (usually $620). With the dollar as it is now, I don't think that is much more than $35 US. Thanks for all the advice, folks. Dee
