cable connection

We are headed to Ajijic for our first extended stay which brings me to the issue of TV and internet connections. I am thinking of Telecable TV and their fastest internet connection. A neighbor has mentioned- that system may not be reliable. He prefers Tel Mex and Star Choice. Since we would like to disconnect the service after three or four months when we head back to SF I prefer not to have to stand in line at Slims outfit...any thoughts on this?

Telecable is only Okay for TV. There are just not that many TV channels in English, but the price is right, about $230 per month. But their high speed internet is 3 much faster than Telmex-Prodigy Infinitum's download speed and their six Meg download connection which costs $449 pesos per month has an upload speed of 2 megs which is about 8 times faster than Prodigy's upload speed. Is Telecable's internet more reliable, I've heard that it wasn't when it first started but that it is getting better.

That said my Prodigy Infinitum connection has been down now for more than a week. They admit the problem is at their end. I'm canceling it tomorrow and will try out Cybercable (Telecable).

How am I able to go on line? My primary ISP is Lagunanet. I use the other as a backup to guarantee 100% connectivity.

So Pete - when you get Cybercable, let us know how it works out. The speeds they offer are very attractive. You do need, I think, to also have their t.v. service.

Ugh. I need to pick between one of these two this week. I had generally been told that Telmex was a lot more reliable than Telecable, but slower. But now hearing about your (and others) outage with Telmex, I get the feeling it's just a roll of the dice.

Yes you also need the basic cable package which I already have which costs maybe $239 per month as well.

OK.....you asked for "thoughts".

How about this............ forget about TV..........

Immerse yourself in Mexican culture and travel around Jalisco. Join a spanish language class, READ (tons of great books at LCS).......... play bridge and golf. Hike the trails ALL over the hillsides. Instead of watching a DANCING with stars program.............GO dancing!! There are 1001 better things to do than watch the boob tube. Certainly you can catch a news blurb on-line with any media source. MSNBC to FOX. I like the NYTimes on line myself.

I suggest that you do NOT isolate yourself and use valuable "life energy" watching the BOX. For three months (or whatever your duration is) you can get by, and you will feel very liberated in the end. PLUS. I bet you will have experienced MUCH MUCH MORE of Mexico without it!

Oh.........if you did want to see Tina Fey on SNL doing her Caribou Barbie routine (or anything else) you simply go to U-tube and catch the clip. Even I need my TV fix now and then, but it's just 5 or 10 minutes........... not hours of mindless viewing.

OK..............Now you can all tell me what a buffoon I am for my "enlightened" comments about living in an alternate culture.............. foreign to most Americans, especially "expats".

My suggestion. Enjoy the journey.......... TV free. I do and I always feel rewarded for it. Hopefully some others out there have had this experience too.

Thank you Pete. We will move forward and I'll let you know how it goes. We also have had Laguna Net but I would like to not have the clutter of their receiver on the mirador.

You are right CristalHombre. But the only thing good about Telecable is that the majority of the programs are in Spanish. The trouble is I don't watch the Spanish language programs enough, because I am lazy. It's easy to understand English and difficult for me to understand Spanish.

Having a cable connection to TV does not equate to watching something called "dancing with the stars" ... whatever that is. Yes, the NYTimes on line is great. And I do take Spanish and have for the past two years. I doubt that playing golf will raise my cultural awareness of Mexico. But perhaps watching a few programs on Mexican TV may...

You sound like my mother! I still disagree with her that reading is intrinsically better than watching TV, and I do read a lot. Trash novels don't trump National Geographic in my opinion. And watching news blurbs on line isn't intrinsically "better" than watching news on TV. It's a matter of preference of how to get the information or entertainment.
Sometimes it's rainy or really hot outside and I don't want to go out and do all those swell things you mentioned. Sometimes I like to watch CNN or Fox News on the TV instead of reading or watching the news on-line
Having satellite or cable TV doesn't equal "hours of mindless viewing" any more than having liquor in your cabinet means hours of mindless drinking. Having a computer with internet access can be just as life-sucking.
There are probably 1001 better things you could have thought of doing instead of being on-line and commenting on this thread, right? Your choice, and isn't choice a great thing?

Wow!! Talk about telling other people how to live their lives....that's a little over the top. We each come here with our own set of ideas and desires and what we want to get from this country. If I go to visit the USA should I also emerge myself in their culture? And what is their culture?

But cristalhombre - you only visit and do not live here. Spend a year or so living full time, and then come and tell us how to live our lives here. Your comments then will have more validity.

Well I knew I would get "slapped around" for my comments.

BUT...........for the record, I DO NOT have "television" or cable here in the Portland area. When I tell people that I have never seen the Simpsons (this is absolutely TRUE) they look at me like I am an alien. Guess that shows you, (and your comments prove it) I am in the 'minority' on this one.

The other part of this "suggestion" to bail out on TV, is that of my own experience. About 10 years ago, we decided to pull the plug. As I recall my wife (an educator) had the idea. She had read an article about comparing those with the tube and without, especially for students and our daughter was then about 7. This report was about as glaring as should one smoke or not........ I also recall that on average a normal American watches something like 25 hours each week. I can't say that I am necessarily better off............... but with my extra 25 hours a week, here is what I do:

First off.................I work full time "plus" (self employed)
I am a busy parent of a 16 year old (which makes me an official taxi driver)
I get to the gym 4 mornings a week (at 5:30).....but then I am in bed by 10 (no television programs to distract that dead-line). I am 25 pounds lighter today. My joints like that!
I participate in a Tues night Conversational Spanish group.
I belong to a Toastmasters group (Wed night)
I volunteer at our local elementary school with a reading program for 1st graders, every Monday AM.
Trying to become a better bridge player, with a duplicate training (I try and go 2 nights a month).
I attend a private Spanish lesson every Friday morning. then I probably study 3 hours a week.
My golf game NEEDS help ........and soon I will rejoin that.
I have a constant current affairs library book on the nightstand ALWAYS!
I have an I-pod to keep me connected via Pod-casts to all that I need to be aware of (News in audio format)
We generally have a weekend outting. This past Saturday was a hike to Angels Rest (Columbia Gorge), a beautiful 5 hour hike. I missed all the football games I used to watch.

My bio and activity log is not to impress anyone............. but I can tell you that I NEVER had time to do the 'extra curricular' stuff that I do now. I used to watch all the evening shows everyone else does. Now I have free time and I use it!

I like television................. but I sure like the available time I have now much more, and if I was offered a choice, I would NOT re-subscribe. Not knowing what I know now.

Once you get out of the habit of viewing............ you can find endless opportunities for community. We are after all - social creatures.

There is great book that you might want to check out....... "Bowling Alone, the collapse of and revival of American community". That author speaks of the major influence of TV for creating an isolationist culture. Much different from 50 years ago. I might mention that I read this book when I was attending a book club at PSU known as "Cultural Creatives" (one more non-TV activity that I found enriching)

A couple of other things I have noticed, that I think are quite interesting. When my daughter's friends come over for a sleep over and such................. they just can not believe that we do NOT have cable TV. These girls seem so un-easy without their normal habit of TV viewing. They really have a hard time NOT being entertained........It appears they do not have an ability to self direct, with a book, playing the piano, listening to music.

Also our house is very unpopular for family gatherings with in-laws when there is any type of televised sporting event that conflicts with the plans. My wife will call her brother and ask......Hey if there is NOT any thing on the tube for you this Sunday, would you like to come for dinner. Seahawks get first position...........(maybe we are just really boring??). Perhaps our lively discussions at the table threaten those used to being "plugged in".....no se

I realize that TV is a great entertainer and if you think you are better off hanging out in front of the tube............ go for it.

The original post was something like this.......................We are coming for 3 months to test drive the area, which TV system do I choose..........I just suggested "Choose neither". Get outta the casa and experience the World.

In 2000, my first real in-depth experience in Mexico, we traveled from Oaxaca to Baja over 11 weeks, from town to town. I think there were a couple of soccer games on the televisions in the small tiendas and restaurants. We did not feel cheated, missing Oprah, LOST or Letterman...........OR any of those other forms of entertainment.

My point was simply that you can really expand your world without TV.... and I have lived that way for a decade, so I felt confident in suggesting it.

Not making it WRONG................... just wanting to suggest the opposite has been "mas mejor para me".

Feel free to keep "slappin me around" if you like, I can handle it. I am very comfortable with my position on this and I realize it is NOT for everyone. So be it.

I just wanted to suggest another alternate line of thinking for the concept of............ "HOW DO WE BEST SPEND OUR 3 MONTHS VISITING MEXICO"..............

hasta amigos

So it sounds to me that you were a television equivilent of an alcoholic. The only way you could keep yourself from over-indulging was to go cold turkey? Some of us are "social watchers" and can stop when we want.
I have a TV, and remarkably, I know it has an "off" switch.

Congratulations to you for the ability to manage "selective viewing".............. Perhaps I was a TV - aholic. No doubt I was a habit viewer............ I probably just wanted "grey noise" and mindless entertainment. For that - I am guilty!

I was just looking up this topic (TV viewing) on "Google" of course. It appears my numbers were well understated. In the USA, the average "household" has the tube on for over 8 hours each day (see the chart below).

Jeez.............. Now I am curious "why" do Americans "on average" (not you Sioux4noff) watch twice as much boob tube as most of the world.

I guess this begs the question???

Are we bored?
Are we needy?
Are we unable to create interests in our lives?
Are we unable to entertain ourselves?
Do we need the talking heads to fill us with view points?
Do we just like infomercials (did I spell that correctly)
Are we just simply wanting to "veg-out"
Is this a form of relaxation?

OK I am not trying to create anymore "attitude" with this post......... You all know how I feel about TV. But damn..............8 hours per household....... that is a ton of hours each week for tube time. Yikes...........

I'm happy to be member of AA-TV!

Seriously..............any ideas why Americans watch twice as much??

DESPITE an increase in entertainment choices, watching television remains as popular as ever, according to the OECD's “Communications Outlook 2007”. In 15 of the 18 countries for which data were collected, broadcast-TV viewing increased from 1997 to 2005. Only in Spain, New Zealand and South Korea did people watch less. America takes the couch-potato crown, with households goggling at the box for an eye-straining average of 8 hours and 11 minutes every day. The nearest rival, Turkey, only manages an average of five hours a day. Jupiter Images

Mental Prozac. Sedating. For men it puts their brain waves in relax mode. TV brain activity is not the same as "reading a book" activity. When reading, the brain fills in the background and context...with TV it's all
there - not much for the "thinking" part of the mind to do. TV must be treated like a powerful drug - controlled and cautious/selective. TV also is like a drug in that it involves detox/weaning although there is probably no withdrawal. I watch: Africa Trek, 2 mainland China stations (to keep up my Mandarin), Ireland weekly, Duetches World.
