Boiled Peanuts

While this is a favorite Southern dish, I have discovered that it is also popular around Celaya. In the deep southern US, which includes southern Alabama and Georgia, you can find both regular and cajun-style at just about every gas station. They are not popular in Tennessee, but I do have an old cajun friend that cooks and sells them twice a week. He sets up a gas burner and a large pot in the back of his old truck along the side of a heavily travelled road in Nashville. Surprisingly, he always sells out within three or four hours.

In Celaya, I found boiled peanuts stored in vinegar. They are served with chile and lime, go figure, but they are still boiled peanuts. I grew up eating this delicassy, and I was happy to find a Mexican version. Has anyone else tried these?

I grew up in Atlanta and boiled peanuts were my favorite. No I have not found any in Mexico yet, but I may make a visit to Celeya.

At one time, when I worked at Emory University Hospital, my wife and I bought a mountain side cabin in Blue Ridge, Ga. On coming and going from the cabin we would drive through Blairsville. Near Blairsville was Jimmy Carter's cabin, also. Blairsville was the hometown of NASCAR's Bill Elliot and Elliot Racing Team. When you passed his shop, every weekend would be a fellow selling boiled peanuts...his name was Bobby. We called him Bobby Peanuts. He cooked them in an old black pot over a wood fire beside the road. Once you got past his Appalachian accent you would find out Bobby was went to school with Bill Elliot (even though Bobby was probably 20 years older) and even was best friends with President Carter. You could learn a lot around a boiling pot of peanuts in the N. Georgia mountains.

I miss them and the company they keep.

There are hundreds of paths up the mountain,
all leading in the same direction,
so it doesn't matter which path you take.
The only one wasting time is the one
who runs around and around the mountain,
telling everyone that his or her path is wrong.

Dr. Mike,

I believe they are called "cacahuates en vinagre." I'll ask my wife.

Does anyone know if green peanuts are available for purchase in Mexico? I'm going to get Mom's recipe and try it out.
