Does anyone know what this word means, and have you heard it used frequently? I learned the meaning while I was talking to some clients from Mexico City regarding the poor service they had received from one of our competitors.

Chamaquear--to deceive someone, to play a joke on them, to take advantage of their ignorance.

Chamaquear, from chamaco, boy, kid. As Olivia says, chamaquear means to take advantage of the ignorance or naivety of a person.

Exactly.
Similar to "chiquear" from "chico" meaning to coddle or spoil or treat somebody like a baby.

On the contrary. Chamaquear implies taking advantage of someone's naiveté, as Don Quevedo wrote in a prior post. Chiquear means to spoil someone, usually in a loving way.

Sus amigos le chamaquearon para que pagara la cuenta de lo que tragaron ellos.
His friends took advantage of him so he would pay the bill for what they drank.

Mi compañera me tiene chiquillada hasta lo máximo.
My companion has spoiled me rotten.

As I said.

"Similar" in the sense of the formation of the words.
