Ready For The Move

Can't Post | Private Reply
Our Bed and Breakfast near Tulum was finsihed in April, and we are preparing for our move in late October. I have given notice at my job, a little scary to give up the security, but this is what we have been planning for the past 8 years. We got our FM3s in Chicago. It was so easy and stress free I could hardly believe it. We are selling our house, and having our auction in early October. We are selling everything that won't fit in our 8 x 18 foot trailer. Anyone have any advice from your own experience on what you wish you had taken, and what you realize you could have just left behind? We will be driving from Wisconsin, and at this point plan to drive to Panama City Florida and put the truck and trailer on a freighter to Progresso. Does anyone have any experience with that? Any last minute tips or thoughts from those who have experienced such a move will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Diane

Diane - you left out an 'a' in the link to your web.

Are you furnishing and equipping the B & B locally? I'd certainly be bringing linens etc. with me, unless that is already taken care of.

Thanks, yes it is www.casaamordelsol.com
The one thing I really have stocked up on is linens - I started buying them a couple of years ago when ever I saw a great sale. We bought a couch and loveseat in Playa Del Carmen, and the rest we are taking with us. I found the furniture down there to be expensive. We will be buying our tv's etc, again pretty expensive down there, but we are running out of room. The beds are the concrete platforms, and we bought mattresses down there. I guess I am thinking about personal or family items that later I might wish I had kept.

How exciting! Your spot looks beautiful! You DO have to bite the bullet re electronic stuff here in Mexico...which cost more than in the U.S. You prepared ahead re the linens. Good luck and please keep us posted. Welcome to Southern Mexico.

I have a question regarding the menaje de casa.
Is this for household goods only? My question is: do I have to inventory our personal items such as clothing, jewelry?

That's a question best answered by Rolly. He rules!

I moved to Mexico 10 years ago with 3 suitcases and now have 6 bedrooms, 3 baths FULL to the brim! I just can't help myself. I love Mexican "stuff." But I think you are aiming at another "niche" and therefore need more NOB style stuff.

Only if the clothing is going in a shipment - i.e. wardrobe box - contents clothing. Jewelry you'll be carrying with you one would assume.

I love "Mexican stuff" too. I have been buying it for years, bringing it up north, decorated my house in Wisconsin with it. I had someone from Mexico visit me a while ago, and told me it looked more "Mexico" than Mexico. and now it will all be going back down. I really have been envisoning how it will all look in our real Mexican house for a long time. Can't believe it is finally happening. In fact today I am starting to pack up my office where I had a lot of Mexican decor. Looks so plain now.

Bournemouth is correct. You must list everything that is in the shipment, but only things in the shipment, not what you will be hand carrying.

Interesting. I have a few pieces of Mexican stuff in my small cabin-like house in N.H. but somehow it just "doesn't fit," so I don't bring very much NOB during my month-long annual visit there.

What do you mean by hand carry? We are driving a truck with crewcab and pulling a cargo trailer. Is the hand carry the things up front in the cab, like suitcases? I asked about the jewlery because I have ALOT. Would most likely fill a medium sized duffle bag or a medium box. And again the clothes, most likely they will be in boxes.

Then you are driving all these stuff yourselves and not using a moving company - right?

I'm hoping this jewelry is costume and not precious stuff? You'd certainly want to be hand carrying it if precious metals, gemstones etc. If you don't think it can go in the front with you, then if it were me I'd list it as accessories and have it with clothing etc.

Other people may have additional advice.

Mosty costume jewlery, and alot of Amber, but I think I will just have it in a duffle bag with our traveling cloths.
Thank you for your advise.

You might want to load up on the clothing you actually bring with you.

When we moved to Chiapas with two teenage daughters over ten years ago, we sold our house and everything in it and took only what we could carry in several very large suitcases. I made the girls leave behind their grungy jeans and tank tops and (well, if you have children you understand). I assured them that we needed to take a look at what the local girls wore and then we might have Dad send down their regular clothes from Texas.

To our surprise, the chicas Chiapanecas tried to dress just like the teens we had left behind in the US. But when my husband tried to ship down tons of their old jeans and tops, customs said these items had a huge importation tax because the assumption was that such trendy items were for sale, not for personal use.
