I say this because the Jim in Cancun's "horny" suggestion is very far from our slang in Monterrey and the Real Academia. I did a quick search on Google for the phrase "está con ganas." None of the many hits in the first pages identified it as "horny" except the one from Brazil, but they clarified it with sexo: "está con ganas de sexo." That is very different, considering it commonly occured with ganas de ir, ganas de participar, etc., etc., etc.<p>On the positive side, it seems very appropriate for chat and notconfusable (unless you happen to chat with???) as the most common use of "está con ganas" used alone, turned up by Google was used to refer to cool home pages. "Tu página está con ganas!!!!" It seemed those were mostly from Northeastern México (Monterrey, etc.) and Spain. Clearly folks in Cancún may have a horney regionalism. Do you find this Jim?<p>On consulting the Real Academia Dictionary, the phrase "con ganas": It was there clearly labeled as slang and there meant "in excess", or "a real lot of". The example was something like "él es feo con ganas." and "llovió con ganas." So I think it is fair to speculate when we say something is "con ganas," that is the definition we are actually using, and have further contracted the understood "bueno con ganas" when we are talking about something we like in context to simply "con ganas". Cabe mencionar that although the ivory towered RAE mentions this definition, the "in excess" definition is very common slang here in my experience in Monterrey, exactly as defined.<p>On the other hand, phrases including "madre" are certainly translated correctly in this context, but are far more risky since metiéndonos con la madre is sometimes pretty attention getting or offensive. So I agree with the definition, but I would stick to something more along the line of "con ganas" or even more conservatively, "bien botana" for Jim, if he worries about "con ganas", and they wouldn't be my first words to a chica to say "cool", I were to meet her chatting. Maybe after seeing she liked that style, I would show off my command of those words under more familiar circumstances. Personally, I would probably stick to using them for chatting with the boys, mostly likely after work while all relaxing. Or those chicas malas who beat the chicos malos at their own playful game with grocerías.<p>Best...David(MTY)<p>: and you have already started to do it in your post above.<p>
