Water filtration systems

We've seen 2 kinds of water filtration systems. The first, is a whole-house system, the second are the less expensive kind that is plumbed to individual sinks, etc. I know there are links to websites about filters, but I am interested in hearing personal, anecdotal opinions as well. Thanks. J.L.

I cannot give an opinion on the systems that are only directed to specific faucets. I have a whole house filtration system, and it works great. We have very hard water in Tennessee, and it requires a lot more soap to wash cars, clothes, dishes, and bodies. Our savings of using less soap for daily needs has almost paid for the system in just three years. It also gives me the confidence and convenience of being able to grab a glass of water from any sink in the house. I also have saved a bundle by not having to buy bottled water. I may be imagining things, but I even think that it makes my grass a little greener.

I have a small Turmix filter mounted next to the kitchen sink. It cost about 750 pesos and contains a ceramic cartridge that needs to be changed every three years. I use it to fill bottles of drinking water for the fridge, and so far (a little less than a year) it works fine.

Is this a system you purchased in Mexico? If so where and what brand? Again if purchased in the US where and at approx cost. It would sure make sense to have a whole house unit. We have our own well from which the water is much cleaner than the city which at times is cloudy. We feel fortunate that we do not have to use city water inside the house but would love to explore getting a whole house water filtration system.

This is a very complex question. It all depends on what you are trying to remove from the water. The first step is to have the water tested. Then you can determine the correct system. I doubt that any normal filter will do much good in Mexico as the standard for good water is very low. I would want to know if the water is treated. Untreated water is not drinking water. Filters can easily re move taste and particles and some chemicals. They cannot remove E coli unless you spend big$$$. The easiest system is to use a pump from a garafon to a special faucet at your sink. No worries about changing filters.
