: christophe
Wey (or Güey, or Buey)can be 'man' between friends...Like "Oye güey..." would mean "Hey man..." but in an agressive way it can also mean "Idiot" "Stupid" "Dumbass" or "Asshole" depending on the rest of the sentence.
My (Mexican)husband and I just had a conversation today about the possibilities of the word....Hope it's helpful...

I completely agree with Kindra's translations (though I suspect they will suffer from Quevedo's sword) and can only think of a tiny bit to add. Even when güey is used with what I'll call "manly affection" between two friends, it is still (generalizing if that were possible) uncouth, even if kids say it in every phrase they utter with their friends. To bad "cuate" and "compinche" have lost some of their use to "güey."

Although, it originally was used to insult a man whose wife was cheating on him with other men. An equivalent to "Cornudo" (someone with "horns"). And sometimes it is still used like that, depending on the context.

: Wey (or Güey, or Buey)....
Interestingly, the Pequeño Larousse Ilustrado says that another meaning (besides castrated bull) of "buey" is a man who wife cheats on him, a cuckold. This is similar to another word, "cabrón", of similar meaning and usage, although the Pequeño Larousse says that "cabrón" refers to a man who allows his wife to cheat, which in English would be a "swinger" or someone with an "open marriage", but the Spanish term seems to be rather pejorative of course, when not used affectionately between male friends.

It is really spelled "güey", as David pointed out. In Monterrey, I heard this word used constantly on the bus, by irate cab drivers, on the Metro, etc.
I have heard that it really means a man who has a wife or girl friend ("novia") who runs around on him. I have heard young men, who supposedly were friends, talk to each other using that word. I have also heard it used by irate bus and cab drivers when someone tries to cut in front of them on the street. It is generally a crude, insulting, and vulgar term, not to be used in polite circles.
: I was wondering if anyone knew the equivalent of "wey" in english?
: thanks,
:

Sorry!! as I happen to be an old time Cheech & Chong fanatic. I had them in mind as I typed away - who else would be my model "dos güeyes?" They do fit the bill!! Did you ever see the 1987 movie with (sadly just Cheech Martin), music and script written by Cheech, and directed by Cheech, "Born in East L.A."? (A play on the Boss's 1984 "Born in the USA" album) It was this movie by this very talented crossover comedian who I should credit for the "East" you object to.
The description on the video case: "When Cheech Marin is accidently deported to Mexico without I.D. or knowledge of Spanish and unable to convince U.S. officials to let him back in the U.S., the comedy begins. In between unsuccessful schemes to cross the border he gets duped by a dippy doorman, picked on by prison pals, and smitten by a senorita."
While it doesn't take much to amuse me, I thought this film was great, and it is in my classics. I denounce racism in all its presentations.
Mis respetos...David(MTY)

I also think "Born in East L.A." is a classic. And I don't think your joke was racist at all; in fact, I think most Mexicans would find it funny. Maybe Jaime's feeling better by now.

Of course I wasnt offended by the Taco Bell chihuahua either (loved that dawg!) as were some.
: I also think "Born in East L.A." is a classic. : christophe
I was the one who asked this question and now after staying in Mexico for 3 months can answer mi own question. "wey" which is how mexicans spell it, would mean "dude" or "man" in English. This word is almost present at the end of each sentence among friends, however, this word can be vulgar if you do not know the person. Such as "Buddy" or "Pal" in english.
