MEGA vs Telmex and SKY

Can't Post | Private Reply
Does anyone have the full package from MEGA Cable which includes cable TV, internet, and Megaphone? At the moment I have my phone and internet service through Telmex and am thinking of hooking up my SKY satelite dish. This would cost me a total of $1,076/month - telephone and internet is $610 and SKY would be $466. If you have the full service from MEGA how does this compare? How is the service? Would you recommend it?
Thank you, Rosaline

I have a friend who owns an ISP which serves Lake Chapala. I donate my time there helping when I can with the English speaking clientele. Both my friend and another techie I know in the ISP business who happens to be from Guadalahara, speak very highly of Megacable and for internet they rate it number one in the big city.

That doesn't answer your question about the total package. But it's the best I can do. Good luck.

I think Megacable service depends a lot on where you're located. Tell us where you live and someone who also lives there will surely respond to your question.

Esperanza,
I live in Mazatlan. I am sorry I did not realize that the service would vary, but I suppose it would depend also on the local carrier.

I think service also depends on the staff in your local office.

I had Megacable cable and Internet service in Guadalajara (not the phone service) and have nothing but praise for the staff and the service itself. Megacable has just come to Morelia, buying out Telecable. I now live in Morelia but I've decided to wait a bit to change over to see what people are saying about them.

Good point esperanza, without thinking I figured that Rosalinemg was in Guadalajara, not somewhere else.

Megacable operates here in Lerdo. I don't use it, but I have four friends who do and are happy with all the services. Two families switched from SKY to Mega and are much happier. Three friends have their phone service, two of them also have internet. Everybody is pleased

We started off here in Hermosillo with Telmex for phone and internet and Megacable for TV. I hated Mega and so we switched to the only other easy alternative here, SKY.

I have been pretty unhappy with SKY. But when I don't have it (as during the hiatus of moving/changing houses) I found I really missed it. We are still considering a pirated service. Thought about DirectTV but have not had time to research the steps involved in going NOB to buy the service and hardware and then finding someone local to hook it all up and make it work.

The nightmare of making a new house liveable has left me, the gringo, and my Mexican partner totally exhausted. I just can't face, right now, whatever might be involved in switching from SKy and Telmex to anything else.

We called TelMex on July 15th to have both phone and internet service moved from the rental house to the new house. The very next day the phone went dead. The internet continued to work. We left the rental house on July 30th and moved into the new house, even though it is still not liveable,

Just today (August 8th) our phone and internet service started to work in the new house, making its unliveability a little more bearable.

I have concluded that trying to have first world services in a third world country is an extremely frustrating and expensive process, much like trying to pound very large round pegs into very small square holes.

We pay about $750 MXN for TelMex phone and internet service and close to $700 MXN for SKY (including the 3% surcharge for using a US credit card).

As far as television is concerned, you certainly could receive Dish and, since you aren't very far south, perhaps even Directv. Hermosillo as you have discovered isn't a hotbed of expatriate living so I understand your frustrations. I would suggest you drive over to Bahia Kino where many Americans have beach homes complete with satellite dishes. Just ask anyone who has one and ask for a referral for an installer. Some even sell the equipment but, with little ingenuity, you could get one at many of the communications/electronic business on the border. These guys do it for a living. You are not the first in trying to solve the problem. Good luck.
