Difference between Aldea and Pueblo

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm traveling without a good Spanish dictionary.

Hello geri,

For all practical purposes there is no difference between aldea and pueblo--if we are talking about a hamlet or small village. Pueblo does have other meanings as well.

The Oxford Spanish -English Dictionary (1994) says an aldea is a small village or hamlet. Pueblo is a village or a small town. It also lists a second meaning--a community of people.

The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE)--the ultimate authority for Spanish--says:

Aldea

(Del ár. hisp. ad.d.áy‘a, y este del ár. clás. d.ay‘ah).

1. f. Pueblo de corto vecindario y, por lo común, sin jurisdicción propia. [A small town of the neighborhood type and commonly without an administration of its own].

and

Pueblo

Del lat. popu(lus).

1. m. Ciudad o villa. [City or town].

2. m. Población de menor categoría. [Population of a minor category (not many people?)].

3. m. Conjunto de personas de un lugar, región o país.
[A group of people in a place, region or country].

4. m. Gente común y humilde de una población. [Common people of a humble nature].

5. m. País con gobierno independiente. [A country with an independent government].

Here in Zacatecas the common useage for the words is as described in the RAE.

Enjoy your stay here in Mexico.

Hello,

Fortunately, mmaria has on her computer an easy way to display those special letters. It is called the International keyboard. All Windows operating systems since Windows 3 have that keyboard available. On Windows XP, go to control panel, click on Regional and Language options, make sure that English United States is chosen, click on languages and then details and select Keyboard International. Back out and from then on the áéúóú etc will be available by holding down the right alternate key and clicking on the aeiou etc. What could be simpler? On other operating systems the method is similar but the names of the processes may be different. Just experiment a bit.

Good luck. jerezano.

In these parts, I've never heard aldea used; instead they say colonia. Aldea is a very Spanish (peninsular) word.

I agree. I have never heard it used in Zacatecas either. Yet I have seen it used in the newspapers from time to time. No matter, the definition is the same.
