I've lived in Mexico for 11 years. My large house had five refrigerators in it. I use the past tense had because I took all five of them out during the remodel last Sept. The refrigerators were at least 5 years old when I took possession of them and I had them for 10 years for a total of at least 15 years. Never had the previous owner nor I ever used a voltage regulator on these refrigerators. Now take a piece of electronics built to Canadian and/or US specifications, and when I have forgotten to use a voltage regulator I have paid the price. What's my line voltage? Until I complained to CFE (electric utility) it reached 143 at night and got as low as maybe 131 during the day. Right now it's 4 volts lower. I complained and the utility stepped the power transformer down one level. There were times though more than 5 years ago before we had a replacement transformer when the voltage varied between 120 and maybe 110. What is considered standard? Here in Seattle anywhere more than 115 volts and less than 127 volts. In Mexico the standard voltage is somewhat higher. Ideal is 127 but unlike many places, instead of +/- 5%, the voltage level is considered okay if it is +/- 10% of 127 or anywhere between 114.3 and 139.7 volts. Sensitive equipment built to US specifications doesn't always do well in Mexico. equipment built to Mexican specifications usually does very well in Mexico
