When you open a new posting page, right below the text entry box is a short row of command options.
One of them is URL.
To make your web link active, click on the URL box first, then paste or type the URL and then (Important) click on the URL box again. This will close the link command and make the link active.
After you first click the URL box, it will change to /URL which is required for the second time you click that command box.

This true only in the basic editor, not in the advanced editor. The URL linking is supposed to be automatic in the advanced editor, but it isn't always. This why so many people have problems with URLs.

Thanks Rolly.
I never use the advanced editor and soam not knowledgeable about issues there. Perhaps I should switch?
I have passed your comment on to the software folk in Vancouver.
