many variables to consider

In which part of Mexico are you going to retire? In areas where there are a lot of American expatriates or tourists you'll find a lot of Mexicans who can speak English. (Chapala,Cancun, etc.) Outside of these areas, very few Mexicans speak English. It shouldn't be that difficult, most Mexicans are very polite and helpful. You'll be able to get along, but it'll be MUCH easier if you at least know basic Spanish. I'd focus on learning very well the numbers first because your most common interaction with Mexicans will be in stores. Many's the time I've seen a Mexican store clerk counting out change from the outstretched hand of a befuddled gringo who doesn't speak Spanish. ¡Buena suerte!
: Hi

Numbers and manners

I had a friend here who could never get her numbers straight and when the gardener said quinientos (500) she thought he said cincuenta (50)
A costly error.
Also right away learn your salutions and courtesy words. I am far from fluent, even after years of living in Mexico (but have never had in formal education) and make tons of mistakes and provide lots of entertainment to my neighbors..
If you are going to use household help, I believe there is a book or two specifically for the phrases you will need..

Plaza Sesamo

Once you get to MX, tune in to Plaza Sesamo on the TV. Its the same as our Sesame Street, but in Spanish. One catches on pretty quickly to the basics, though I have yet to use the phrase : "Patronizado por la letra N y el número tres"
