Internet & email

I know very little about computers and even less about computer issues outside of the USA. I have two questions I would appreciate some help with.

Is it necessary to use an ISP that is based in Mexico, or can you just use something like AOL, MSN, etc. same as if you were in the states.

Can you use the same email service as in the states, like GMAIL, Yahoo, etc or is it necessary to use a Mexican based email service.

Thanks,

David Harwell

"Is it necessary to use an ISP that is based in Mexico" Yes. Most of us use the ISP provided by the phone company. AOL has a presence in México City, perhaps a few other places.

You can use the same e-mail service you have now.

Dave, just to clarify..... An ISP is needed 'anywhere' to give you your 'connection' onto the Internet. As Rolly mentioned you must 'connect' through any ISP available in your local in Mexico which at this point is likely going to be Telmex, the phone company. Once connected one is free to use 'any' web-based email provider (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) just as you would/do in the US. This is true no matter where you might live on the globe as long as 'someone' is providing that initial connection to the Internet.

Depending on where one lives in Mexico, the ISPs use either the local telephone system (dial-up or high-speed DSL), Cable System high-speed, Wireless Wifi high-speed (not to be confused with cellphone wireless which is also an option not often used) or Satellite service, all just like in the US (but not yet quite as omnipresent).

We use the IP address given to us from TelMex and then we have an "Anonymizer" program which changes our IP address each time we log on, for security.

I have noticed that when I visit a site of interest I start getting spam on the same subject matter.
I would be interested in one of those "anonymizer" programs if you could let us know which it is.

I too would get spam sent to the email address I entered when visiting a site of interest. There is a simple way around this. Simply use a throw-away email address. You know open one up at say yahoo or hotmail etc, and only use it for giving to a site where you might get spam. You could use your other or old email address when emailing friends and other trusted sites.

The program we use is "Anonymous Surfing" from SmithMicro Software. Check it out, you may find it useful.
