I posted a question a few months ago concerning cell phone usage in MX since Verizon has done away with the old North American plan they used to have & received some great suggestions for alternatives. Just wanted to follow up: I just got back from a 10 day stay at my usual hangout in Nuevo Vallarta. I decided to check out MagicJack, as the place I was staying at had high speed broadband available. Now don't get me wrong - MagicJack is not a replacement for a cell phone - you need to have your laptop with you & a headset or simple land line type phone to plug into the jack - you can't carry it around town like a cell phone. But it's ease of use, quality of reception, and cost are worth promoting it, in my opinion. I paid about $40 USD for the jack and a years worth of service. I was REALLY pleased with what I got. The voice quality was that of calling my next door neighbor on a land line, no dropped calls, no problems at all. You have unlimited calling to the US and Canada from anywhere in the world when you can get hooked up with a high speed internet connection. And the cost is amazing. Just in the 10 days I was there I probably would have run up a $300 or $400 cell phone bill had I been using my Verizon cell (I have my own business back in the US so I was on the phone quite a bit). And all those calls cost me basically nothing. I also put $5 in a prepaid international calling account through MagicJack, and was able to make local calls in MX for the cost of about .03 cents per minute, if I remember right. Bottom line - I can't say enough about the MagicJack - it's a great little device & I would highly recommend it for anyone. They are at www.magicjack.com Alan Salls Rio Rancho, New Mexico
