Immigration Office Holidays

Can't Post | Private Reply
We were planning our annual FM3 renewal trip to the immigration office in Morelia on Monday, November 19th. However, a Mexican friend told us that the office would be closed for the Revolution day holiday. His information was that Mexico federal offices have gone to a US like system, moving midweek holidays to Mondays or Fridays to create longer weekends. Per his information the office will be open on Tuesday (the actual holiday).

Does anyone have information on this?

The third Monday is a federal holiday in commemoration of the Revolution, formerly celebrated on 20 November. Unless 20 November falls on a weekend or a Monday, it's just another working day.

Morelia Immigration Office

Does anyone know where the immigration office is in Morelia to get an FM3?

Does anyone have an opinion about having an FM3 relative to the USA - Mexico tax treaty and if it could be construed as a factor for the argument that one is liable for Mexican income taxes?

Is the FM3 the generally preferred alternative to the tourist visa for those living full time in Mexico?

Has anyone had experience getting an FM3 from the Morelia office?

Yes, the FM-3 or FM-2 is definitely the preferred alternative for those living full-time in Mexico.

For tax advice, you should consult with a tax professional.

More than a year ago, the Morelia INAMI office moved to Avenida Camelinas, across the street from Papelería Hiperlumen. They haven't updated their website to reflect the change of address.

The proper name of the office is Instituto Nacionall de Migración = INM

The old name INAMI was changed to INM about 10 years ago.

Look here: http://www.inm.gob.mx/

Rolly, I know this INAMI/INM thing bugs you. Come on down to Morelia and I'll drive you by the INAMI office, where the big sign on the front still says INAMI--and they only moved the office there about a year ago.

You're right, Rolly. But maybe folks just find it easier to remember an acronym that is pronounceable instead of just letters and therefore have resisted the change from INAMI to INM. I have noticed that often in Mexico, government agencies are abbreviated using more than one letter for each word in the title. For example, la Secretaría de Gobierno is SEGOB; the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes is CONACULTA; OSIDEM is la Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán; and el Instituto Nacional de Migración remains INAMI in the hearts and minds of Morelianos. (And on the sign outside their office. :-)

My favourite government office sign in Morelia is the "I M DUM" office.

You can see it here.
