SUNDAY is the Big Day for the NINE BAY SWIM

Can't Post | Private Reply
Dear supporters and those listening in,

Huatulco has had unusal very windy conditions the past two or three days AND it is expected to continue at least through tomorrow. So . . . . Luis has been advised by the harbor people that he must delay the swim until hopefully Sunday. Please keep his SUNDAY NINE BAY SWIM in your hearts and minds and pray that weather conditons are satisfactory.

We have also learned that 13 children from San Felipe are on route to be with him for his swim so we will all do our best to entertain them under one roof until Sunday when the swim takes place. Please keep us in your "minds and prayers" as Luis, Elva, and my pouse and I try to keep up with 13 children for more than 24 hours!

Also, keep those donations and pledges coming . . . we have just received word of the the receipt of a check for $500. We have received $25.00 via Paypal so far. We have pledges for about $180 more if Luis swims the 9 bays. Someone has also pledged $1 a bay and $2 dollars upon completion which is also very helpful.

Stay in touch and keep your fingers crossed for Sunday and a successful swim, please ;-)

SUNDAY is the Big Day

This Sunday morning about 7:00 AM Luis Estavillo Chávez, owner of Los Portales and Onix Restaurant in La Crucecita, will attempt to swim the length of the “Nine Bays” of Huatulco. Recently, Luis wrote to me and said, “We are counting the days for my next swim attempt which will be this next SUNDAY, May 25th. Me and my training team have been working hard since this past December and are looking forward to a successful swim of the whole 9 bays, approximately 22km about 14 miles.”

Some readers may recall that Luis tried to swim the Nine Bays once before, but it was the weekend of “Mean Hurricane Dean,” and he was forced to leave the water early. See --

-- for a previous report in my Blog.

Depending upon weather and sea conditions, Luis will probably start at San Agustin beach about 7:00 AM and end between 3:00 and 4:00 PM at Conejos beach. Of course, his strength and skill will determine the actual time needed for the planned swim.

Luis (and his spouse Elva) is sponsoring this event in part to draw attention to the needs of children in the mountains high above Huatulco. Luis and his family have focused their energy and resources on the village of San Felipe Lachillo which has many children living in extreme poverty who are in need of basic services so they can participate in educational programs. About once a month, Luis and some of his family members travel to San Felipe and personally do what they can to help the children succeed. Here is a photo of Elva helping with some hair washing that was followed by hair brushing and haircuts for both boys and girls –

Recently, the school breakfast program got a roof so the children’s breakfast program now has a formal “cookhouse” as seen in the next photo –

So, this SUNDAY is the big day. My spouse and I will be “on the beach” to see Luis enter the water and waiting for him at Conejos beach to congratulate him on his success. Perhaps, some of you would like to join us “on the beach” and give him all the support we can muster. You can also “support” the children of San Felipe by making a pledge something like suggested below –

SPONSORSHIP PER BAY: $10, $15, $20 for every bay that Luis swims.
SPONSORSHIP PER KILOMETER: $5, $10, $15 for each mile or km that Luis swims.
SPONSORSHIP PER HOUR: Pledge $10, $15, $20 for every hour during the swim.

In order to donate and receive a tax deductible receipt, send your check after Saturday’s swim to –

CoCB
%Tami M.

Walworth, WI 53184

Please make a notation in the memo section “for 9 Bay Swim” and make the check payable to “CoCB.” It would be helpful if you included a self addressed envelope in order to make sure the receipt can be mailed to you quickly. Canadian contributors will also be mailed a receipt and tax number which MAY be helpful to them as well. If you want to donate using PayPal, please let me know by emailing me at --Silversard@Yahoo.com -- in order to receive a correct email address for making a deposit.

Friends and those just listening in,

Luis is in the water and proceeding about 3 km an hour. While the ocean is somewhat turbulent, we are guessing he can make the swim of all nine bays in about 8 hours. We guess he will arrive at Conejos beach between 3:00 and 4:00 PM or later.

You can see him swimming the first leg of the 9 Bays in a YouTube video at --

We should have more photos and video after 2:00 PM or so. Photos are being sent to -- http://www.HuatulcoParadise.net but you have to join the Grupo in order to receive them.

Finally, the Huatulco radio station at 103.1 FM is monitoring the event ON the scene and probably broadcasting reports.

Stay in touch, please.

Luis "gave it his all" but the current was two strong and keep sending him back the direction he came! He started at 7:00 AM from San Agustin and was doing 3 km an hour about 9:00 AM. When we returned to check on his progress about 1:00 PM he was not much further even though he had been swimming for hours.
We watched "contrary currents" push him back whether he went towards the shore or out to sea. When it was obvious he was not making any forward progress after six hours of swimming, the swim was ended. We think he completed two bays but could not make it past the third.

Nevertheless, the day was a good day, and I will have photos of the swim and the kids from San Felipe soon.

The sea conditions had improved substantially, but the currents IN the ocean itself were very strong.

Stay tuned . . .
