Different Versions of MexConnect?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm confused (and don't anybody say what else is new?).

When my partner opens MexConnect's forums, she sees all of your icons next to your posts. She's always asking me things like, hey, did you see so-and-so's new picture? I don't see icons unless I click on a given user's name to PM.

There are other tools that she sees along the top of a post that I never see and other features that she can use that I don't have on my version.

How come my version of MexConnect is so different from hers?

Are you using different browsers? When in doubt, clear the cache and see if that changes things.

Also, if you go to "Edit Profile" and then Display settings, you will find a multitude of changes - including whether or not to display User's images . . .etc.
Have fun and I hope this helps!

I want to second that suggestion. There should be no difference.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help.

I've had all of those things checked the way I want them for years, including 'Show Other Users' Icons'. I don't see the same posting screen she does, I don't see any icons at the left of anyone's posts, and I can't use Advanced Editor when quoting a prior post--I'm writing in Basic Editor right now.

About a year or more ago, when MexConnect was upgraded, I lost the ability to see the cursor at the beginning of a new post. That problem still exists for me. Perhaps it has been fixed for others?

I'd appreciate someone looking into this whole business.

Thanks

Esperanza

As I sit here in the Seattle Airport waiting to fly back, I hope someone else might have a suggestion, because I don't. If this isn't answered soon, I will give David a call, assuming he is still lakeside when I get back

David is on the road and is unlikely to respond in the near future.

The cursor issue is a known issue (not unique to MXC) but the cursor should appear if you click anywhere in the reply box and start typing. (not ideal, I know, but it won't change until the forum software is next overhauled, which is not currently a high priority as most focus is on overhauling the main site software to bring it into the 21st century!)

Esperanza, can you send me a screenshot or shots (Cnt-PrintScreen; then Cnt-V [paste] into an e-mail to tonyburton@mexconnect.com) of exactly what you see so I can attempt to replicate your view to see what's going on? Thanks, Tony.

I asked our software guru in Vancouver to review this thread.
While I was hoping for a miracle answer, here is what he said:

It's likely some very restrictive security setting on esperanza's
virus/spam scanner or browser causing the issues.

let us know if things change here if you make any changes.

Tony, I don't know what you mean by "Cnt". ??

David, I use Firefox, latest version, and don't have any restrictive kind of anti-spam or anti-virus on my computer. My Windows firewall is at a normal setting. Tell your software person, and thanks for posting back to me from the road.

I am looking at you with the latest version of Firefox. I see icons, etc just fine.

However, I could not get a cursor for the text entering box. When I typed a random letter, the letter and the cursor appeared and worked OK.

"Cnt" is Control. On My computer it is labeled "Ctrl."

I use a firewall and virus blockers.

Looks like you have some sort of other problem on your computer.

Pete, does that mean that you have a 60% chance of having a 40% chance of..... ? Would that be the same as having a 24% chance???

OK, so I figured it was Control...and like Rolly's, mine is labeled CTRL. Now where and how do I find Print Screen? I've never done this before, can you tell?

On my laptop it is labeled "PrntScrn." On my desktop it's "Print Screen." It's usually one of those keys to the right of F12 that never get used.

AHA! Thanks, Rolly. Only...it doesn't do anything. I've got the page up that I want to do a Print Screen of, I hit CTRL and then the Print Screen key, then go to a new email and try to paste it in with CTRL-V, and nothing happens at all.

What am I still missing?

Actually Tony erred when he said use "Ctrl" with PrintScreen.... you use the "Alt" key instead.

Windows Help: Print Screen

To do this, follow this procedure:

1. Maximize the window you'd like to capture.
2. To copy/capture the current window, hold down ALT + Print Scrn at the same time. To capture the entire screen, just press Print Scrn.
3. Open a new document in, for example, MS Word or an email compose, then
4. Paste the screen shot by holding down CTRL and V at the same time.
5. Print the document when you're finished pasting screen shots.

On some laptops, at least this is the case of my HP Pavilion laptop, the print screen function is accomplished by simultaneously depressing the "fn" key that is surrounded by a blue box and is located next to the "ctrl" key in the lower left corner of the keyboard. After capturing the desired image/screen with the boxed "fn/prt sc" I can then paste it "ctrl v" into a MS Word document. It is best to already have MS Word open and ready. Sometimes when I do not already have MS Word ready for the paste, and open it after having already done the "fn/prt sc" opening MS Word seems to clear the print screen from memory.

I am sure the technique I require is peculiar to this laptop.

My whole point is that people need to try various combinations of the alt, ctrl, boxed fn keys and the prt sc key. Apparently the combination that works on each device can be some slight variation of these keys.

It doesn't work. I followed these instructions (thanks, RickS) to the letter. When I tried to paste to the email, (CTRL and V at the same time), nothing appeared.

Is there a way to disable the F keys that I might have done inadvertently?

*sigh*

Other advice? I'm sure you're all getting mightily tired of this--I know I am.

ETA: Oops, crosspost with JohnB. I'll try his suggestion before I continue to whine.

Nothing works! WTF!

Maybe on some, but.....

The Fn key is the "Function" key. On a laptop (and some computers with small keyboards) 'some' keys have another 'function' because there is not enough space on the small keyboard to get all the keys/functions that have been developed. For example on mine the "L" key also has, in small printing, "PgDn", or Page Down. Holding the Fn and while striking the "L" key gets me not an "L" but will take the "Page Down".

Maybe your "PrtSc" key is controlled by the Fn key.... on my laptop (Toshiba) it is not. The Print Screen capability works by striking the PrtSc key by itself (although it will also work even if I hold down the Fn key.... but it is not required).

Esperanza, I wish I could help you! It sounds like there is something obscure on your PC that is set to eliminate some functions (or just plain DRIVE YOU MAD!). Could have something to do with Javascript or ActiveX (do you 'not allow' either of these?). There IS a way to disable the PrtScrn function (if one is a real guru.... I'm not... maybe something did this inadvertently on your PC).

I'll do some research (but since you can't see the avatars on your computer I suspect it is something REALLY obscure).

Hey Rick. I'm too tired to figure it out :) I got 2.5 hours of sleep last night in Dallas, but made it back to GDL at 11:00 AM and then Lake Chapala before noon. I know where home is. It's here. Once I get a little sleep I shall play around with the print screen controls and see if I can add to the confusion.
