What's going on in México?

  | Private Reply
Hello all,

A posting at the web site:

www.bestsyndication.com/?q=20080407_vacation_in_mexico.htm

about What's goin on in México states that soon Puerto Vallarta will have the largest concentration of foreigners resident in México. It also touts PV as a paradise completely ignoring the HOT SEASON during the depths of Summer.

But the thing that stuck in my craw was the statement:

Friends--Every North American that you see in Vallarta, and they are easy to spot, is either on vacation or retired, i.e., none of them have to go to work tomorrow! They are all open to new friendships and new comers are always welcome. It’s one big party with no looming pressures of the office or the commuter drive in the morning.

Do you really believe that? Are the North Americans in PV so much more friendly and open to "new comers" than those of us in jijic or San Miguel de Allende or even Jerez?

But what really disgusts me is the damage to the economies of both México and to us retirees that unrestrained real estate interests are doing with disguised come-ons such as this.

True it can be argued that the overall economy of the new Nayarit Riviera with its million dollar lots etc will be good for México as a whole. But what is it doing to the "native population" that has been displaced by such megaworks? And the inflation that the ones remaining are encountering?

Hasta luego. jerezano

I read the article. Thanks for the link.

What a crock! I guess in each of the 15 points there was at least one bald-faced lie, or at least something grossly inaccurate, eg., all highways leading to PV from the north are super highways. I think not.

Too bad he did not mention that PV is also the gayest city in Mexico. That would cool a few jets.

The author refers readers to his real estate agency website, http://www.pvreba.com/, so at least he deserves points for being upfront and honest about his purpose. Any real estate agency, wherever located, is full of hype. The same can be said about San Miguel de Allende, Lake Chapala, or Cuernavaca.

Several years ago, Town & Country magazine did a piece on San Miguel de Allende, touting that it was filled with passionate expatriates. I just couldn't get the image out of my brain of lusty-filled denizens pawing and fondling one another at every street corner.

The real estate hype is no different than the statements many foreigners make about how the Mexicans are such a happy people, each of them prizing family, the Catholic Church in a land where domestic violence and child abuse are unknown, how the sounds and colors of Mexico fuel the senses and spirit, how Mexicans would rather shop at the local tianguis instead of Costco, and how passionate we Mexicans are about our velvet paintings, sombreros and burros.

Jen, well said and ditto.

Yes, this is an interesting article and as always, it’s not without an agenda. The author of the article Jim Scherrer is a retired entrepreneur from Houston, founder of Puerto Vallarta Real Estate Buyers´ Agents (PVREBA), whose mission (so they say) is to reveal all the recent changes that have occurred in Vallarta while dispelling the misconceptions about living in Mexico. Of course, it goes without saying ol’Jim boy’s luring stands to make a substantial bottom line increase wooing with images needed to reach that end.

He tosses it out, and lets it fall where it may. Someone will pick it up, run to the nearest bank, and fulfill ol’Jim boy’s intention. Hey, and why not. Isn’t this how back then Acapulco and Ixtapa were put on the map? These articles are in the millions, and credence is just a short distance behind.

What affect this will have, is very close to other Mexican Rivera’s of days gone by. What is interesting and a bit on the funny side is something a radio show host (who I believe now belongs to the non-exclusive dust club) used to always say in closing (Harvey something?) “And that is the whole story folks!” ……..or something like that? Laugh

I have removed the remark which you found offensive. It was not my intent to denigrate the beach lifestyle. I lived in Baja California for several years before moving to San Miguel de Allende. The gringos who live in each place tend to be quite different from each other but, by no means, would I say that either is better than the other.

Boy, did you ever misinterpret JohnBleazard's comments. He's no gay-basher.

He's openly gay--as am I--and his remarks were directed to homophobes whose excitement over moving to Vallarta would drastically diminish if they knew how many Friends of Dorothy visit and live there.

Hi and excuse me Esperanza, but at the risk of being perceived as the lame duck, or perhaps being totally outside of the hip, sheik code words for something else, who in the heck is Dorothy and her esoteric group of friends that will drop in on her..?

Besides good sense, I know I’m missing something here, maybe its just the way I didn’t wake up this morning….…Laugh

Heck, I'm a confirmed heterosexual, and even I know that *Friends of Dorothy* refers to the gay community. The reference is to Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz, portrayed by Judy Garland, who has goddess status among gay men.

I see nothing wrong with John's reference to Puerto Vallarta as being the gayest community in Mexico. I think it's perfectly all right to point out that some communities are preferred by certain groups. All over the world, there are communities and concentrations of like-minded folks, whether those folks are Mormons, Mennonites, born-again Christians, Jews, golfers, practicing and non-practicing Nazis, libertarians, librarians, lovers of country western music, retired postal workers, and even Canadians. It's no big deal. Some people like to mix with others who aren't their kind, and some folks seek out their own kind. And some really don't give a whit. It's human nature to label others, and we all wear labels of one kind or another.

Sorry to be late to the party, but I was at Costco with a Friend of Dorothy (i.e., my partner). Jennifer's got it right, of course.

And Oscar, even if we didn't already know there was a Mrs. Oscar, we'd know you weren't a FOD...look at the way you spell chic, sweetie!

Jennifer, you are right on , Vallarta is no different than countless cities that have exploded over time based on their location and what it has to offer.
I have live here for four to six months a year and have done so since 1970 in those 38 years I have seen huge changes from a quiet fishing village of 12,500 people to 350,000+, real estate people regardless of where they are at will glorify the situation thats how they make their living.
I speak from experience as I am a retired Real estate developer-Builder.

I would have answered sooner but as a 6 year major league baseball season ticket holder, I attended a game last night only to wake up this morning and OMG.
I guess, once again, you caught me with my calzones down and there’s absolutely no place to hide ……..sheeees! Boy, who would have known that this bit of trivia would have come from my venerable MC neighbors. Gracias. They say education at times comes at a price and this ticket to ride on the humiliation train has no exits.

Well with your indulgence, I’ll just kind of humbly pick up my calzones, lift my head up high and kind of glean a bit of dignity, suppress my grimaces, throw a big toothy grin your direction and drivel thank you, thank you, Jen, NEOhio and Esperanza and please excuse me while I shuffle my silly ass down the road..... Laugh

Now, now. Please don't go off and diss velvet paintings, which are to some what Thomas Kinkade is to others. At least now before reading Sam Quinones' Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream, where Quinones points out that the now-defunct black velvet painting industry was among the first maquiladoras:

Doyle Harden never could paint a lick. But he became the Henry Ford of velvet painting on the border. A Georgia boy seeking fortune, Doyle came to El Paso/Juarez and turned velvet painting into the 1970s pop icon it became. He had a factory that employed dozens of painters who daily churned out acres of Dogs Playing Poker, Aztec Warriors and JFKs. Chuy Moran was the pre-eminent painter in Doyle’s factory, the King of Velvet Painting in Juarez, whose name appeared on more velvets than anyone. America’s demand for velvet turned the great despised art into salvation for thousands of working-class Mexican border youths. Palestinians and Scientologists made a good living selling Juarez velvets in the U.S. and Canada. Before it died in the early 1990s, velvet painting had given birth to the border’s art scene. This is the history of velvet painting on the border, and of the men who made it happen. http://samquinones.com/antonios_gun.asp#4

Calm down, folks. Why get so exercized over a marketing ploy? How many times have you heard in the States hyperbole extolling the virtues of one state over another? And by the way, Bleazard, I am really surprised to see your negative comment about gay people. I don't know where you're from, but I think you should consult your brain before you open your mouth. Or maybe you're just from the "bigotist" area in Mexico. I'm embarrassed for the readers of this forum.

There is no apology in order here. And I have read the thread. These off-handed remarks-even in jest--are wide open to misinterpretation. Intolerance is always ready to rear its ugly head. I am not gay, however I do have many friends in the gay community, some of whom have invested heavily in P.V. real estate. Anyone taking a walk around Centro will see evidences of the heavy investment by the gay community in that neighborhood. This is a good thing for Puerto Vallarta and a good thing for Mexico. I lived in Franco Spain and saw firsthand the effect of cultural discrimination of all kinds. It was not a pretty thing. So, if I sounded like I was overreacting, so be it. Overreaction is not always a bad thing.

Got you Esperanza, please reassure your main squeeze it was all tongue and cheek banter whose main purpose was to fluff the air a bit and to tell ourselves more often then not, it’s healthier to not “always” take ourselves too seriously. Incidently, just got back from another beautiful afternoon baseball game which was topped off with great 9 to 4 win!

As for John’s one liner, personally, I agree, and got the drift of exactly what John meant. We who know John and why he said it, in essence was indirectly in defense of the gay faction. However, there is always someone somewhere lurking, ready to jump on a soap box frantically waving their arms to garner all the attention they can while pontificating and indirectly replenishing the attention a diminished ego never stops wanting. But then again, that’s another story for another time.

Hasta Luego
