What bus lines travel from Toluca to Zihuatenejo?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am planning to pick up my sister and her two kids at the Toluca airport in June, and take them to Zihuatenejo by bus. I cannot find any bus line online that goes from Toluca to Zihua. I have looked at Primera Plus, Omnibus, and ETN.

Does anyone know what buses might travel this route? How far is the airport from the central de autobuses? Their plane arrives midday, and I am wondering if we just go to the bus terminal around 2 pm, are we likely to have to wait a long time for a direct bus to Zihua???

IMHO, your best bet will be Autovías from Toluca to Morelia and Primera Plus from Morelia to Zihuatenejo. I don't think you'll find direct service.

Really? I am so surprised! Toluca and Zihua are such large cities, and the road between the two, when seen on a map, seems to be a substancial, major highway. I don't understand...

Can you recommend any other bus lines to try?

Can't provide an answer to your question, but would comment that the road you describe (direct from Toluca to Zihuatanejo) apparently has a degree of notoriety since it passes close to areas of known banditry and unrest. If you do find a bus service on that route, my advice would be to ensure that you travel during daytime, leaving as early as possible. Tony.

You can also travel from Toluca to Morelia on Autovías and then from Morelia to Zihuatenejo on Parhikuni. You'll find Parhikuni at http://www.parhikuni.com/. It's really unlikely that you will find direct service from Toluca to Zihuatenejo. Coming from Toluca, you're going to have to stop and change bus lines in Morelia.

Tony's advice is excellent. Travel during the day.

OK so we will come to Morelia first. I cannot find a website for Autovías. The ETN site does not work, and Primera Plus does not travel from Toluca to Morelia.

Anyone know of a website for Autovías? Any other lines to try?

Call these numbers in Mexico City and they'll give you the phone number for Toluca. Autovías does have a website:
http://www.centraldelnorte.com.mx/...aginf.cfm?tema_id=30 You'll need to speak Spanish, of course.

Telephone numbers for Autovías at the Central del Norte, Mexico City: 55674550 y 52598247.

That's really helpful! Now I have never called outside of Morelia on my newly installed house phone, and I tried dialing 55674550, and then 445 567 4550. This does not work. What is the procedure for dialing out of the area?

Check with a travel agency, or go to the Camionera Central for direct, one-on-one info.

Dial 01-55- and then the number as I posted it.

I forgot that you're in Morelia. By all means go out to the Morelia bus station and buy your Autovías tickets there. They will sell tickets to any destination no more than three days in advance of your travel dates, so don't bother going any earlier. Be sure to tell them that you want tickets from Toluca to Morelia, not Morelia to Toluca!

Autovías does not sell through travel agencies, nor will its agents reserve seats over the phone.

You need to know that the bus ride from Toluca to Morelia is three hours and forty minutes.

I just did all this in February.

It is surprising that bus schedule information can be so difficult to get. A trip to Central De Autobuses to get a schedule is a diversion, but perhaps necessary. I always hesitate to buy tickets like this in advance. Never have before and take these buses all the time. Usually, the buses are almost empty. And, I dont know if the plane will arrive late and what time we will arrive at the Central in Toluca.

I will go to the central for information and also see if I buy the tickets, miss the scheduled bus, if the tickets can be refunded or used on a later bus. Mexico is a wonderful place to practice patience!!!!

Agreed about the patience. A friend recently told us that after 5 years livinng here, she's stopped asking "Why?".

My recommendation is don't buy the tickets in advance, and be prepared to stay overnight in Toluca, if necessary.

Just to make your life more interesting: if you have an INSEN/INAPAM credencial, you can get tickets for yourself at half price, depending on allocations by the bus line.

¡Buena suerte!

What is this credential, how does one get it, and will it work on other lines?

The INSEN card is a Mexican identification card for anyone over 60 years old and it entitles the person to discounts on many common purchases. The new name for the INSEN Card is INAPAM (Institute Nacional Para las Personas Adultas Mayores)

Rule 1: You must have an FM2. There are reports of offices here and there issuing the cards to FM3 holders.

Morelia is one of those places that accepts the FM-3 for issuance of an INAPAM card. Anyone living here will need to stop by the INAPAM office to get a list of what to bring to make the application. The card is free. Here's the address:

Mariano Jiménez #592, Esq. Av. Solidaridad, Col. Nueva Chapultepec,
Morelia, Mich.
C.P. 58260
