What food is hard to get in Mexico?

Still working on selling up everything (except our house here in Indiana) to move to Mexico to be with my husband who is already there.

I am lactose intolerant and was wondering (especially if you live in Morelos), is it hard to get soy products down there? I was thinking that I will probably have to kiss my soymilk-and-cereal breakfasts goodbye. Sometimes I pop Lactaid pills (another hard-to-acquire item there?) and eat pizza, but drinking milk and eating ice cream make me really ill. Here in Indiana I can buy a wonderful soy ice cream called "Soy Dream." I've been eating more of it this week, thinking I won't be having it again for a while.

Guessing that in the D. F. that stuff could probably be found, but I don't plan on living there. The D.F. will be close enough to drive to on occasion if we live in Cuautla or Cuernavaca (the current plan), but not on a regular basis.

I saw a Wal-Mart in Cuautla when we drove through; however, that doesn't tell me what they sell inside it! For all I know, it could be full of chile ancho and sabritas (sp?) and all things Mexican.

Not that I won't be able to adjust without soy products or other favorite treats; just wondering if they are there, is all.

There are several brands of soy beverages available where I live - an island off Cancun. Some pass themselves off as milk, others with a lot of juice, as soy juice. Most have more sugar than I care to have sneaked in on me, but it is here. Walmart has boxed soy milk. I have heard of but not actually seen yoghurt like soy products. The schools here offer an apple and soy juice as an alternative to CocaCola for lunch. You should be OK!

Since I'm not a soy fan, I can't say that I've looked for soy products, but I have seen soy milk just about everywhere in Morelia, along with tofu and soy "meat" products. And I've seen Lactaid pills at Costco and other stores.

In the last 20 years, the food landscape in Mexico has changed incredibly. Products that weren't on the shelves now are. But still missing are:

Indian spice mixes
Fresh cranberries (except in the rarest of Estadounidense outposts)
Candied ginger

Just before the move and for about a year after moving here, you'll make an effort to have Care packages delivered by visiting friends or load up on the impossible-to-find stuff when you go to the states, then you'll figure out substitutes, and by the time you reach the point of just no longer caring, the stuff will end up on the grocery store shelves.
