This topic has received wide play in the SoCal papers (and some TV stations in San Diego) and it has deterred not only tourists from visiting but locals as well. Even our local restaurant critics and ordinary citizens who shop in Tijuana have been publicly stating they're tired of being hassled on the Mexican side by crooks and police, and they're tired of the 2-3 hour hassle caused by draconian U.S. border crossing procedures on the reentry to the U.S.

Speculation immediately prior to the new mayor taking office in Tijuana was that the late summer/fall crime wave was opportunistic and perputrated by those expecting to be swept out of positions of power/authority when the new mayor assumed office. The former mayor was a PRIsta and the new mayor a PANista. The fascinating part for me is that sitting here in San Diego I get to observe an interesting dynamic. San Diego and Tijuana are, for all intents and purposes, now one large city that just happens to be divided by an international border crossing...the busiest international border crossing in the entire world. The fortunes of each city are intimately intertwined, as the saying goes, when one sneezes the other catches cold. What happens in Tijuana affects SD, what happens in SD affects TJ, it's inescapable. There are numerous cross-border organizations, some governmental, some commercial, some charitable, and they've all been trying to deal with the fall out from the crime wave because they understand the delicate regional dynamic that exists between these 2 cities.

Unfortunately, the actions of a few criminals has only add more fuel to the xenophobic fire burning on the U.S. side of the border.
