Article about Calle 62 in Merida - real estate

I was interested to read in the 23 december Diario de Yucatan about Calle 62 in Merida, which is being redeveloped as businesses, or bought by foreigners. The article pointed to the area between Calle 41 and 55.

The article recounted the story of one family, who sold their house to foreigners, and then regretted it later.

The article said that you can spot the ones owned by foreigners, as they have been fixed up. Apparently the old buildings are not being torn down, but remodeled.

One of the attractive features of that area is that the lots are generally 150 feet deep, although the width varies.

I know that some folks here have bought or are thinking about buying property in Merida; it sounds like there is already a steady flow of foreigners purchasing there.

You are right about more and more ex-pats buying and moving to Merida. We've seen the ex-pat community swell from about 500 full time residents to over 2000 over the 4 years we've been here. That's not including those who bought and just vacation here. More will come and many will leave as Merida doesn't meet their preconceived ideas of what "paradise" should be. We've already started to see that. What is not said in the article is Calle 62 is a very busy street. A main thorough-fare for buses, cambis and just plain heavy traffic use. Both day and night. It would not be my choice of street to live on. Yucatandreamer's husband.

The thing about Merida is that since it is a major city, a few thousand ex-pats will not have a large effect on housing prices unless they all want to move to the same small area of town. This is not a San Miguel where a few thousand gringos can raise the prices to stratospheric levels. It is a city of near a million people.

We are going back for a week in December, sandwiched between 5 nights on Isla and 4 nights in Playa del Carmen. We plan to explore some of the non-Centro neighborhoods just to the north of Centro - colonias like Garcia Gineres, Mexico, Mexico Norte, Chuburna del Hidalgo (the Merida colonia, not the beach town) and around there.
