Using a NOB cell phone to call Mexico from Mexico

Hi All,

We have a Telus cell phone and phone number from Canada. When we are in Mexico we can call home to Canada, receive calls from Canada and receive calls from within Mexico. From Canada we can also call to Mexico. However, we have yet to be able to get through to a Mexican phone number while we are in Mexico. The automated Mexican Operator comes on every time saying the number cannot go through. I have contacted our provider and it seems that we should be able to make these calls, but they can't really tell me how to (go figure). I have tried using 011-52........., I have tried just the 7 digit number, I have tried just the 10 digit number...alas no luck. Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Try not 011-52, but 01 and the 10 digit number or if that doesn't work try 001-52 and then the 10 digit number. This is only a guess but just maybe that might work. Let us know if it does, and good luck

Tab, I hate to sound like a Johnny come lately but I had a similar problem two years ago with the Verizon North American plan. It similarly allowed calls to be made from the US too Canada and Mexico, plus within Mexico too Mexican numbers and back to the US and/or Canada.

The problem with my wife’s phone 2 years ago was she couldn’t make calls within Mexico as well because prior to leaving the US, you have a dialing sequence Verizon required to set up your phone for roaming capability within Mexico. I remembered afterwards that I had done this sequence on my phone, which made it possible for us to make the necessary calls, or else we would have been in deep dodo. Not that this is going to help you but you can perhaps speak to your provider tech support and inquire if there was/is such a sequence prior to leaving to Mexico.

My sequence was: *(ASTERIS) 228 then press the SEND button, and then select OPTION 2 extended roaming.

If all else fails, try bringing this to their attention and see what they say.

Thanks for your suggestions Johanson and Oscar. I just got back from Mazatlan and wanted to give you an update on how I was able to make the calls to Mexico from within Mexico on my Canadian cell phone. I thought I had tried this before but obviously had not: Dial the number as if calling from a Mexican phone - no 011 / 001 or 52. That was it and it worked perfect!
