New Route Laredo to Chapala?

Soon we will be driving from Laredo to Chapala. Instead of Rt 54 we are considering taking Rt 57 just before Saltillo and stopping in Matehaula for the night. The
next day we would continue on to San Luis Potosi and try to link up with Hwy 80 to Guadalajara/Chapala. Is this the best route? I understand it is a difficult
proposition to find Rt 80 off the periferico around San Luis Potosi...does anyone have any good directions to help locate this road? Is this route all super highway?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

i have driven this way several times. the last was on the 19th of july. take the periferico around san luis. when you rejoin the mexico city highway turn back north for
several miles and there is a free bypass that goes west for several miles and runs in to highway 80. turn south and you are on your way. i like this way the best and
you will pick up the autopista west of leon. there are plenty of signs or ask. if you stay in matehuala you might try the oasis hotel as the las palmas was 80 us dollars
for 2 on the 6th of july. the oasis was 50. buena suerte
