Patzcuaro Day of the Dead Market

Can't Post | Private Reply
Since we moved to Patzcuaro, I have put together a blog for our friends and family north of the border.
Most of it is just stuff that is going on with us, but the other day I put together something that may have a more general interest.

http://lifeinthecorazon.blogspot.com/...-of-dead-market.html

If you haven't had a chance to check out the Day of the Dead Market in Patzcuaro, I have put a few pictures together.
Click on the pictures in the blog and you will be able to view the full size images.
I hope you like them.

Todd

Very nice, Todd! I have a few photos, focused on los dulces de los Muertos, as sold under the portales of the Plaza Grande in Pátzcuaro.
The second series of photos were taken yesterday in the Panteón of Las Cuevas-Nuevo Rodeo. (I was invited to photograph, and was assured that it was ok, as I'd been hesitant.)

Thanks, I like your pictures also.
I understand you hesitation at taking pictures in the cemetery, without an invitation like you had it might feel like crashing someones funeral.
.... Or would that be family reunion?

Apart from the Mass, it was more like a field day. Ices were being sold from the back of a pickup truck just outside the gate. Kids were running around and climbing the 1 meter high wall, even during the mass.

After the services concluded (by the way, there were no funerals this year as there was last year.) we adjourned to the shade of the north wall for lunch. It was very basic, but we appreciated the sharing and hospitality. Frijoles, sopa de arroz and chicharrones en salsa de tomate. Tortillas, of course. They could also make a ham sandwich if you wished. That seemed a special treat to the kids.
I brought a raisin challah and a dozen cinnamon rolls that I'd baked that morning.

The whole scene was bright and colorful and festive. A hymn was sung by two amigas as they prepared the meal.

Todd, I’ve been watching your blog come along and the additions of photos/foot notes make for interesting color visuals of what seems like a good time in your life. I too look forward to going to Patzcauro and Morelia soon.

Your blog and Anónimo’s entries, is an attractive invitation to see more on ones own. I understand it will probably be very cold the beginning of this November and/or December or otherwise due to previous commitments we won’t be able to get there till the middle of April. I have a suspicion April will be okay but then I hear the rains and heat can get a bit intense about then. What’s your take? I’d very much enjoy getting there between January and March but it’s just not in the cards.

None the less, look forward to your photos and future blog enhancement.

Thanks, I hope to start doing more posts like that, covering events or different areas.

April the rains haven't gotten here yet, it will be nice and warm, not too hot.
Well, Morelia can get a little warmer, but nothing I find uncomfortable, but that can be a matter of taste.

All the best,

Todd

Great pics -- thanks for sharing. Todd, I just subscribed to your blog. Your photos captured the spirit of the day. Anonimo, your link isn't working for me.

Here's my whimsical contribution -- it's of me and my "new friends", just before heading over to the market.

Appreciate the pictures by all. Brings back good memories of our last visit to Patzcuaro in April of 2006. Planning a longer visit this next January.

See http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/11/03/travel/20071003_MEXICO_SLIDESHOW_index.html

But did anyone pay attention to the cabalgata of some 800 riders who started out at the wee morning hours from the Catedral in Morelia ending up 12 hours later at the Basilica?

Probably doesn't work because when I corrected the year, the URL broke. Here's the new, corrected URL:
http://picasaweb.google.com/...vas/DayOfTheDead2007

(Tested, and it worked for me. It may be slow loading.)

The 1st of November, just as it has during the past 22 years.
