heres the deal. I have a SHOW car (93 Honda del Sol) that I want to bring to Mexico. I have the option to either bring it myself or have my company do it. what would be easier?also I know that I need an original plus two(2) copies of the following documents:
*Valid proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate).
*The appropiate immigration form (tourist card).
*The valid vehicle registration certificate, or a document, such as the original title that certifies the legal ownership of the vehicle. It must be in the driver's name.
*The leasing contract (if the vehicle is leased or rented) which must be in the name of the person importing the car. If the vehicle belongs to a company, present the document that certifies the employee works for the company.
*A valid driver's license, issued outside Mexico.
*An international credit card, also issued outside Mexico (American Express, Diner's Club, Mastercard or Visa), in the name of the driver of the vehicle. but I dont have an FM3 only a tourist.. I am working here but go home every 3 months to renew my tourist card. should i get a FM3 to bring my car? I am goign to be living in guadalajara for about 2 more years so the car needs to be here also. also since the car is not paid off yet does that affect me bringing the car into MX? how does insurance play a role in this? remember this is a show/daily driver so I want it to be insured if someone steals something. is that possible?alot of questions but pls help me out!! thanks!!

Bring the car yourself.If you are going to be here for a couple of years, get an FM3. That way you don't have to take the car back every six months. It's a long drive from Guadalajarato the border. You must have a notarized letter from the lien-holder granting you permission to bring the car into Mexico.By all means get Mexican insurance. Since the car will be registered in the USA (you can’t register it in Mexico), your insurance will list you as a tourist, and you will have to have an address in the USA as well as in Mexico.

: what is a lien holder???The company to whom you owe money on your car – the finance company or bank..: also so your saying I will have to have insurance in mexico and also the US to brign the car.Your USA insurance is not good in Mexico just as your Mexican insurance is not good in the USA. You are not required to have insurance in Mexico, but you cannot imagine the trouble you will be in if you have an accident in Mexico without insurance. The damage to your car will be the least of your problems as you sit in a Mexican jail for god only knows how long. Things work differently down here. And sometimes very slowly.

I should have said that without insurance you will sit in jail whether you are at fault or not! You will, most likely, stay there until the authorities sort out what happened and until you and the other guy settle up on the damage costs. That can easily turn into days.

your saying that if I bring this car down here I need to get US insurance and also Mexican insurance. I do want mexican insurance since the car will be in Mexico but will it be necessary to haev US?? is there anyway around that?

Hi Richard,No, you do not have to have US insurance while your car is in Mexico. I assume you have it in the US now. You need to talk with your current insurance company to discuss your plans to take the car out of the country for a couple of years. They may have a plan to suspend your US insurance while the car is in Mexico and reinstate it when you return. I have heard (cannot verify) that some companies charge a "fine" to insure a car that has been un-insured for a period of time. You may wish to talk to your state DMV to find out the best way to re-plate your car when you return. Mexico doesn’t care if your US plates are expired. If fact, I didn’t have plates on my pickup when I came to Mexico.I have not done these things myself because I’m here to stay.
