Hello thfarrell,
No, I don't know the derivation of the word except that is is from the French gloriette but the RAE gives these definitions, perhaps they will help you see why that word is applied to the traffic glorieta.
glorieta.
(Del fr. gloriette).
1. f. cenador (‖ de los jardines).
2. f. Plazoleta, por lo común en un jardÃn, donde suele haber un cenador.
3. f. Plaza donde desembocan por lo común varias calles o alamedas.
4. f. Cuba. quiosco (‖ pabellón abierto).
