Retirement Home/Assisted Living Info-2007 Updates?

I am a newbie who has benefited greatly from reading your forums on living and retiring in Mexico. What a wonderful community you are, even tho' you live in different places, and what a wonderful information resource!

That said, any updates anyone can provide on long-term care providers, their locations, and costs would be very appreciated. There have been various threads touching on these topics from time to time but none updated much since late 2004/early 2005. For example, there was apparently an assisted living facility in Mazatlan in 2004 called the Melville, but its website now describes it as a "boutique hotel." Other providers mentioned included two homes operated by a woman named Alicia (in La Canacinta and El Chante), Mi Casita in Ajijic, Casa de Ancianos de Chapala, La Casa Nostra (south of Marisol), a facility in Celaya run by nuns, and another one in Queretaro. There are also facilities, I gather, in Guadalajara, but none were specifically identified in any of the posts I read.

To my disappointment, I can find no websites or descriptions of any of these facilities or any information regarding their 2007 services, costs, contact information, availability, etc. At the same time, I can find no information about retaining in-home services as an alternative or if there is anything in Mexico as exists NOB--a healthcare agency that will provide for hire companion care or a geriatric nursing or home health aide--generally with a 2 or 3 hour minimum.

Any light anyone can shed on this topic would be greatly appreciated. It will mean the difference whether I can bring my 85-year old mother for extended visits or my 34 year old son who is a quadriplegic. Ooops! Almost forgot--what is the GDL airport like for someone like my son who is wheelchair bound? Does the airport have a lift or skywalk for debarking wheelchair passengers? Or will it be as I recall from a few years back in Puerto Vallarta being carried off the plane head first in his chair by 4 men--none of whom spoke English--with his head looking up at the sky through his knees? Thanks very much in advance for ANY information you might have. %=}

GDL airport does have some "snorkels" for boarding and exiting planes but not on all of them. I would suggest that your travel agent might call the carrier you would be flying on and ask if they will be using the snorkels or stairs.

The last I heard Alicia's and La Casa Nostra charge about 1,200 USD a month for a guest confined to the bed.

Hello ANNEP46

I don't live in the Lake Chapala area so I can't give you any personal information. But there is a Lake Chapala society, they do have their own forums (try searching for Lago Chapala) and there is a Lago de Chapala publication monthly which lists several assisted care facilities as advertisers.

Go to those sources and see what you can find. Also, for the Guadalajara airport question, ask Esperanza by private mail. She is a fund of information about Guadalajara.

Good luck on your search for information.

Adiós. jerezano.

Search for my posts.

My mother was a resident of a private geriatric clinic in Guadalajara
for roughly 6 years before she died late last year.

I paid a group of expats who used a local facility there.

Our situation might be a little bit different than yours, since mom
required nursing home level care (significantly more assistance than
assisted living), and I selected her facility for that level of care.

Most homes in the Lakeside area do seem to be geared more toward
assisted living, rather than intermediate or skilled nursing care.

I'm not quite certain of my skill levels in posting and replying in the wonderful venue this forum provides but THANK YOU EACH VERY MUCH for your kind and helpful replies. I am tardy with these thanks--which I regret--because I did follow up on reading through archived articles on the Mexico Insights site, going to the LCS and American Society of Jalisco sites, and still others trying to assemble information while also writing a few emails to persons as suggested for updates. (I'm awaiting replies.) As I distill what I learn, I hope to make a summary post to this forum on the topic that will "pass on" to others everybody's contributions.

It is very helpful to learn, for example, that Lakeside facilities are more geared toward convalescent or assisted living services than those serving Guadalajara, where there's greater diversity and availability of skilled nursing. (In that regard, the tender care you oversaw for your mother, Bill, is very moving. I'm both empathetic and very sorry for your loss. My own mother is increasingly lost to dementia.) So far, I haven't been able to turn up an online service directory with contact information and/or current (working) Web site links for any facilities of whatsoever kind in any location. There was one exception--while I did locate online a home healthcare agency in San Miguel Allende providing in-home care, I don't know what to make of accessibility there as compared to Chapala-Guadalajara for anyone needing a wheelchair or walker or assistive device.

But again--with any luck (I'm assuredly committed to finding out as much as I can)--I look forward to posting for all whatever I find out as soon as I can. Muchas gracias!
