My husband & i will be driving from laredo, tx to puerto escondido with a small trailer. What's the best route to take- that allows us to bypass mexico city. Time isn't that important, i just don't want to deal with la ciudad! Thanks!

I think Laredo is the worst place to go through. Is there a special reason why you're going through there?
I assume you're coming from the eastern US, or else you'd want to cross at Nogales. From the east, the choices are to cross at McAllen and follow the coast to Veracruz and then cross through Oaxaca to the coast OR cross at Del Rio and go through Durango to Mazatlan and follow the coast down.

Time isn't that important, i just don't want to deal with la ciudad! Thanks
First drive through south Texas to McAllen, Tx. Then cross over at Reynosa and stay on the flat lands
on #47 south to #180 south, passing Tampico, Pozo Rica, and on the the 'Costa Esmeralda' centered
around Nautla, a great unspoiled part of Mexico with plenty of Trailer Parks. Then south along #180 to
Veracruz to Acayucan. Then cross Mexico at the lowest spot. Route #185 crosses over to the Pacific, turn
north on #200 onto Pt. Escondido. A slower alternate would be to cross the Sierra through Valle Nacional on #175, up and over three very slow mountain ranges, then down to the floor of the Oaxaca valley, still leaving another day of descent from OAX to P.E.
(tough driving in a van or truck IMHO. I remember coming down this way once in a disc braked VW van, and asking "whats that on fire?" as smoke poured past the windows and into the van. Holy S%^$# IT'S THE BRAKES ASMOKIN'. Needless to say we took a break and proceeded down in FIRST GEAR not second!)
Pernel

I think it's a training center because none of the clerks know anything and the line moves very slowly. Not too many Mexicans go through there, and sometimes there are more clerks than customers, but that doesn't help because the clerks just stare into space. I haven't been through there in 3 years, so it's possible it's changed.
Excuse me if you already know this, but if you don't have one you need a copy of the Churches' guidebook. http://www.rollinghomes.com
It has, along with a lot of other practical information, details on the border crossings.
I don't mind Brownsville. The owner of the trailer park in Cd Victoria, Russ Burrows, recommends Los Indios.
Thanks for researching your trip. You'd be surprised how many people just go and try to figure it out when they're there.

ALTERNATE >> Laredo to P.E.

: My husband & i will be driving from Laredo, tx to puerto escondido with a small trailer. What's the best route to take- that
allows us to bypass mexico city. Time isn't that important, i just don't want to deal with la ciudad! Thanks!
Following my prior advice, I realized that another Mexico City BYPASS route exists, one which I use regularly to get to the
Costa Chica in Oaxaca.
Basically you drop straight down on #57 to Toluca, bypassing D.F. by using the toll road to Taxco, and on to Acapulco,
turning south on #200 through the Costa Chica. Here are some details.
McAllen/Reynosa follow #40 to Monterrey and Saltillo, There is HEAVY industrial traffic on this route. South from Saltillo are
some long desert stretches with good motel services. through San Luis Potosi [Federales] south around the Queretaro
bypass - WATCH CLOSELY NOW - for #55 south to Acambay and Toluca, a narrow two lane with a ton of truck traffic.
There are good Motels Altacomulco. Toluca traffic SUX!, - a mini D.F. - so take care and watch for the Taxco signs, which take
you around to the ring road and on to the toll road to Taxco. ( I got a failure to use seat belt multa (fine) here, we talk him
down from $30 to $2.
Now just head downhill to Iguala (excellent hotel - Camino de Real Sur), Chilpancingo, More TOLLS, Tierra Colorado. Do Not
take the 'shortcut' through Ayutla PERIOD. There is now an Acapulco BYPASS to #200, now just turn south down the Costa
Chica, Pictures HERE >>http://www.digthatcrazyfarout.com/costachica/ to P.E.
This is the most DIRECT route, however you must pass through, Monterrey and Toluca, however Taxco is my FAVORITE
Mexico town, just don't try to pull a trailer through the narrow streets!

Gracias
If you're going to Q.Roo, there's a detailed driving itinerary at the link given below. If you're driving an RV it's especially pertinent because it has directions to RV parks. It's free.
